Got my bedding washed and dried yesterday, quite a bit of sunshine around, but today its seems to be blowing a gale past my window.I am watching the trees blowing around and can here the wind blowing leaves around outside the back door,so I think it will be heating time later.
At the moment I,ve got my furry dressing gown on over my clothes
Got a roast dinner for today, lovely, will make 2 extra for tomorrow.

  • Have been doing a few repairs to my winter clothes before I need to use them .All washed and ironed and ready folded for when I change my wardrobe from summer to winter. Having said that its 36 in the shade today again and roasting. At this time of year it should be around 24 and I should be looking forward to wearing my long sleeves again.

I have sorted out my clothes, so will be having long sleeves on thin garments first then gradually build up the layers as it gets colder.

At the moment all the windows are open in the house to give it a good airing. Other people must be thinking of the winter as well as the village is full of gypsies selling wood for the fires, pots for the garden and live chickens and turkeys to fatten up for Christmas. It's very noisy as they are all shouting about their wares through loud speakers on their vans.

I am about to go and put the goat skin rug in the washer (it just fits!). We use it in front of the olive wood fire in the winter because if a hot cinder comes out and lands on the goatskin it only smoulders and does not burst into flames. Even though we have a good fireguard it still happens sometimes. Olive wood burns hot and for a long time so its quite economical to use .

We start the rolling electric cuts tomorrow so I went and stocked up on long burning candles and a spare oil lamp. My solar torch is charging in the front room window, I am really pleased with it, it gives out a lot of light.

    Have a lovely Sunday folks.

I have extremely wide feet.. Evans shoes are often too narrow!
I've just bought some lovely boots from Hotter Shoes, they cost £42 (reduced from £85 ), it's more money than I hoped to spend on boots but they get great reviews and hopefully will last a good few years. They do an extra wide fitting for the same price.

    Heaven boots, black or brown:

Extra wide fitting, only brown left:

Could you make batches of homemade big soup and freeze it in portions? Might be cheaper than tins?

  • ARTYDOLL - when you make a main meal, try to make enough for 4 portions and freeze the spare ones when they're cool. It really doesn't take long for you to build up a nice little collection and saves on fuel as well. Cheers Lyn.
  • Mr A have 1L bottles of -36 screen wash for £3 just now (as well as de-icer but didn't look at the price as have loads left :o). On the expensive side but hopefully only needed for a very short period of time!

Cats managed to get a 10kg bag of the cats' dry food that I'd started to look for an offer on - someone on another forum gave me a voucher code so saved £10 :j & brought the cost down to £34.90 so well chuffed (cheapest I've ever managed to get it!).

Wellies had the dispatch notice so hopefully they'll be here mid week - another few things ticked off the list!:T

well think of the extra heat as keeping the thermal mass of your house warmer for longer so you can use less fuel!

have you considered making a solar oven and/or a haybox? fairly easy to do from cheap (often salvaged) materials, i hear they can be used even in winter, you just have to turn them more frequently to catch the sun.

also, do you have a way of cooking on or near your fire? might be an idea as you will be dealing with those rolling powercuts. if you can find some cast iron pans those can go straight on the fire with no problems (just be sure you have a safe method for removing them and a safe place to let them cool down)

please let us know how you get on without electricity, i'm quite curious to see how you cope and what workarounds you come up with.

wishing you the best, enjoy the free heat whilst you have it (maybe enjoy it a little extra for those of us here that have been deprived of it all summer :p)
