I also llke the idea of those credit card torches and the suggestion to put a torch on each windowsill. That way, all family members would know where to look and it would probably be the lightest area in a blackout. Credit card torches could probably be tucked under a lamp where you normally sit too. I wonder if anyone has seen them anywhere else please?
these are the ones i have, i know they work well http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TB016-Wallet-or-Pocket-Credit-Card-Torch-Light-/360328975562?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Camping_LightsLanternsTorches&hash=item53e547d4ca&_uhb=1

Flash warning of severe weather
Warning type: Damaging winds and further heavy rain
A further spell of very wet and windy weather is likely across much of the UK during the course of the weekend. With rain falling on to already saturated ground, the risk of further flooding is very high.
Further rainfall amounts of around 25-30mm are expected across Western regions.
Our main concern is the strength of the winds, the latest higher resolution models are suggesting gusts of 90mph across Southern coastal locations Saturday night and in to the early hours of Sunday morning.
The strong winds then extend eastwards, bringing inland gusts of 70mph across the South East, East Anglia and the East Midlands during Sunday.
These wind speeds are not to be taken lightly, damage to property, roofs, and out buildings are a real possibility, we will continue to keep an eye on developments, and will issue an act now weather warning if necessary when the event occurs.
Further to this, the combination of high winds and soft ground leads to an increased risk of trees uprooting.
If you are concerned about your property please visit the Environment Agency website to check the latest flood warnings in your area.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -

Bought really as the HB shop near DMs doesn't have a car park & it's about a 10 min walk (uphill) to the nearest car park - I buy loads of stuff as there's not one near me & after struggling up the hill with loads of heavy bags & several packs of loo rolls in the pouring rain .... and then the handles on the loo rolls broke  decided enough was enough and bought one!
It's fab - not used as much as it should be but do also use it if I walk along to the village shop - esp in bad weather.
I've been thinking whether it's worth taking it into Al*di / Li*dl and using it to pack the trolley into as well - the only thing would be lifting it in/out the car if it's really heavy.
I love mine and it's funky!;) Have a look on here http://www.shoppingtrolleysdirect.co.uk/index.php?PARTNER=STD&gclid=CJfRu-6c2LMCFYXLtAodPEUAVQ just to get an idea of the kinds of designs you can get.1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31

Re cat litter I've just been reading a few pages back, I bought paper litter and I was very impressed. The bag lasted ages and ages.
I cant use normal litter cos it makes one of my cats ill so used wood pellets, but paper is much better and lasted twice as long as the wood pellets, plus none of that mess.1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31

Batten down the hatches it is going to be a wet and wild weekend. Going out to get some things sorted with my boys this morning then by midday I will have them in. It will be a long time for them in their stables until tomorrow morning but if we are going to get winds speeds of 60-70mph again I am leaving nothing to chance.
I am going to move the wheelie bins as well and get them wedged in so they don't get blown over and anything else that is likely to be rolling around. This weather is going to do some serious damage.Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

hello ladies and gents
Been a long-time lurker on this thread, find it really interesting.
I'm probably a bit late to the game, what with the terrible weather we've been having but i was wondering if anyone had any advice on what i can do to winter prep the outside of my house and garden?
Not really any plants as such in the garden to worry about, just weeds! Half the grass is weeds, so we want to put some kind of plastic sheeting down all winter to kill it off, to re-seed the lawn in the spring, anyone know where I can get plastic sheeting cheap? I need to put the swing chair away, but is there anything else?

Does anyone have a suggestion for my cold hallway, the reason is that we have a cat flap and it blows in the wind and lets all the cold air in.
The cat is an outdoor cat does not use a litter tray and is nearly 20 so really don't want to try and start that now.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you solve it.
Also the microchip activated cat flaps are out of our range as things are tight just now.1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

Do you have anywhere you can put a curtain up? My downstairs loo is next to the front door & the hall is quite narrow at that point, it widens after the loo & that is where I have put my curtain up, lined with fleece on an extendable shower curtain from argos. I have a space of about 2 metres from the front door to the curtain, plenty of room in your case for the cat to get through the cat flap & can push its way around the curtain.
Don't know if this is possible in your set up but it works for us. Can really notice the difference the other side of the curtain if you pop to the downstairs loo in the evening. Our hall is single story, quite large & open up the stairs & landing & can be quite chilly. Having a curtain up at either end (front & back door) has really made a difference to make it feel much cosier in there!
