Finally got around to getting some of the double glazing film from h0mebase today - it is slightly discounted atm.

Put it up at the back, single glazed, door and also bubble wrapped the bottom half. I was planning on adding a panel of thin wood as it is a very thin door but the cutters at h0mebase weren't working... Typical as it has only taken me a year and a bit to get around to going there with the measurements!

When I do get the panel I will staple radiator insulation stuff to the back of it and then nail and wood glue it to the door around the beading that is already there, so it won't look weird.

It feels so much warmer in the kitchen already :)

I wonder if anyone has a great idea for blocking the draught through the front door keyhole when the door furniture isn't the right metal for a fridge magnet? I thought about Blutak but worry it would clog up the keyhole, it's already hard to unlock the door as it's swollen from the rain.. Maybe sticking a flap of bubble wrap or similar above it would work?

I just use a bit of sellotape on my back door keyhole and it does the job and you don't really notice it. :)

Insulating tape here - maybe a bit more weatherproof than Sellotape?

(But does Sellotape stand up to the wet? :) )

ETA Just thought this through - we put the tape on the outside, so we can still use the doors easily and don't lose the keys.

I used masking tape all last winter and it stayed stuck although we were lifting it regularly. By insulating tape do you mean that foam backed stuff please? Reckon that's a good idea maybe for the back door which isn't opened as much in the winter :)

  • I will copy a post I put on the tough thread. Mar lives in NE and in scotland. Please please realise that any weather postings are just general ones, I cannot say much as it is copyright. Scotland, being close to scandinavia will always be strongly influenced by what goes on up there

Only for Mar and where she lives. I only see showers and gales mar up to 19-23 then perhaps a bit of the white stuff and hail. Then 24-28 maybe heavy white stuff but only NE scotland and only maybe

Whatever happens re weather anyway, we should always be prepared like the good preppers that we are

Why didn't I think of that?! I have the tape on the inside and I have to use that door a lot so I will move the tape immediately to the outside!

    Thank you!

Insulating tape is the plasticky stuff electricians use. Ours is still in place from last winter :).

Fruball, I only thought to put it on the outside cos I saw our neighbours had :o. I rarely, if ever, lock the back doors from the outside.

My back door is always locked from the inside too so having the tape outside makes perfect sense :rotfl: It just never occurred to me :o

Remember to thank your neighbour for me :D

Quick update...another weather warning from UK stormchasers...a new bulletin will be issued later tonight

The strong winds continue with some phenomenal rainfall returns out there, with embedded thunderstorms, in what we call a 'squall line'.

We are keeping an eye on yet another deep area of low pressure for Saturday in to the early hours of Sunday morning across the South, with storm force winds possible (different model outputs vary) and yet more heavy rain, another advanced weather warning will be issued 6pm tonight.

    Stay safe out there.

Mardatha doesn't live in the North East kittie. We had a dull day here, but not a lot of rain and barely any wind.
