Is this the time to fess up that I have over 100 Toilet Rolls stashed in the storeroom, or does that make me sadder than ever?

I am slowly getting there. Buying a few extra every time I go shopping.

Looks like we could have a cold blast heading our way over the next couple of weeks, so cover up your tender plants, seedlings and fruit trees :(

  • I try to buy in essentials to go into store if I have any housekeeping left at the end of the week so I get soap, shampoo, loo rolls, toothpaste, shower gel, tinned goods, stock cubes, tea bags, pasta, rice, in fact anything that WILL store safely and as a consequence we rarely actually run out of anything I use on a regular basis. It's a bit like having a shop in store, never masses of anything except cuppasoups which we go through oodles of but one or two of things I'm likely to use up and need for everyday cooking/cleaning/keeping us respectable(well close anyway!). I keep a weather eye on levels of what I've got in store and make a mental note to replace items if I actually use the last one. It makes more sense to me to put that spare £5 into 'futures' rather than spending it on treats that will be gone quickly and forgotten. I do keep some chocolate and sweeties in store for rainy days, so we're not too hard done by either!!!
  • OK so yesterday I invested £4.95p in 'futures' I visited the 99p shop in town and got 1 x bottle of Radox Muscle Relax bath liquid, 1 x bottle of Tea Tree Shampoo, 5 x bars of Imperial Leather Soap, 1 x bottle of Antibacterial Hand Wash, 2 x folding camping glasses (tumblers) all of which will sit happily in my store until I need them. The bottles are big ones, and I regularly see in there branded goods that cost over £3 in other shops. The use by date is usually at least a year on must things most times much more than that and it saves me quite a lot of hard earned cash by using my surpluses money wise to top up my stocks. It means that in a hard winter, I can usually supply our wants from home rather than have to venture out in bad weather.

This thread coming up confused me, it's bucketing down today and I couldn't think what month it was.:o:D

I realised that I don't think I even wore my winter coat over the past winter as it was so mild.

  • I think back to a couple of years ago when we had quantities of snow even down here in the deep south and it was so cold and the snow got compacted on the roads and pavements and it was like a skating rink. I was stuck indoors for over a week as I just couldn't stay upright on it and was very glad I'd got my store upstairs which meant we didn't have to either risk breaking something ( lots of folks here did that winter) on sheet ice outside the local shops or go without milk in my tea or bread to go with the winter soups and stews as I always have lots of flour and dried milk, oh and oats for porridge and lentils for soup. Yes last winter was, despite the predictions, mild and benign in most of the UK but a bad one can potentially happen at any time and I like to stock up when I've the means to do so, Lyn xxx.

My winter preps for this year involve new windows and insulation. I'm just waiting for the last estimate for the windows so I can then go back to everyone and get the details tweaked so they are quoting like for like, and I have a surveyor coming on in a week or so to check what can be done/needs to be done about the cavity wall and loft insulation.

I had switched my heating off Easter weekend, but as its been so wet I put it back on only to wake this morning to find it needed to be re-pressurised  The last engineer had fiddled with the valves and had over tightened one of them so I had to very carefully turn a screw 1/8th turn to release some pressure so I could turn the valve! I've turned the screw back again, and the pressure is up to 1-1.5bars and then the heating kicked in with scalding hot radiators. That explains why I didn't want to get up this morning, the room was too cold :rotfl::rotfl:

I need to sort out donating all the 'spare' hats/gloves/scarves we have. At the beginning of winter I had a box bursting with them, so I dumped them all into a bag and hung it with the coats. As we've used the stuff, I've put them back into the box. Now there are one or two things still in the bag I'll move over to the box (thinsulate gloves & the things for walking on ice) but after checking with DD that I'm not donating her 'favourite must have' gloves, they can go in the box for the charity shop :)

I think I need to sit down and work out my list from scratch. I've just been copying the list over repeatedly so its years out of date. :o Somewhere I have a print out of the huge prep list someone posted on here somewhere at some point :rotfl::rotfl: So I'll use that as reference when I can find it :o

Everything wintery is so much cheaper now it's warming up. I wanted a small heater for the living room so when I'm home alone, I can put it on for an hour without the need of having the whole house heated. I found one on amazon for just £5.99 and it's only 600w so that's low on energy. :)

Bought more shelves for my storage room a few weeks ago and now will slowly stock them when I see a good offer! xx

Goals: Save £500 for emergencies, Save £200 of Amazon vouchers for Xmas, fix my holey clothes!
