Preparing for winter IV

I had all my emergency cooking stuff, cobb cooker, fuel, gas, charcoal, kelly kettle etc stored in a large outdoor wooden storage box. We need this stuff because we are all electric and I think next winter will be crucial wrt the ukraine and russian gas and potential powercuts
We all know how wet it has been and anything that could get sodden has suffered. We opened the container yesterday to fine mould, fungus and lots of damp but just in the nick of time. Everything inside the large box has been saved, cleaned and dried. Box is now in the tip and it took two estate car loads. I have invested in waterproof outdoor storage boxes and will repack everything in them, ready for winter. I breathe a sigh of relief
Btw, a couple of periods of intense heat to come soon, within weeks, so am ready for that too and that includes my vegetable plantings and water storage

I agree about stocking up on wintery items during the summer months. I got two base layer tops today from Sports Direct for 3.49 each.
I tried them on and had to go down a size because of the generous fit.
They were marked up with 90% off stickers so a fantastic reduction.
They also had leggings/long johns for 3.99 and if you can fit into kids sizes they were going for 2.99 I think. They had them in black, bright pink and lilac for ladies.
They've got a round neck and long sleeves and are quite a good length to tuck in so there's no pesky gaps to let the cold air in.
Very happy bunny today I am!:hello:  please play nicely children !0 -
dh has just finished building a wood and coal store from old pallets.
and yes we are getting a solid gate next..........:p
and we have started to buy a couple of bags of coal a week to fill it and have started seasoning logs, so if the gas does go off because of the ukraine troubles we still have the multifuel stove to keep us warm.
I want to buy extra hot water bottles as well, in fact i saw an old fashioned ceramic bed warmer on the market last week, so i will look and see if he still has it on wednesday. if push comes to shove a hot brick wrapped in a towel will do the same thing.
i would love an indoor wood burning oven like jamie oliver's or an outdoor pizza oven but my budget won't go to either
please excuse the lack of capitals i have just had an op on my hand so it is difficult to typeBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

If you can buy anything out of season then that is the best thing to do with anything. Christmas cards in January are perfect. You know that you can use them the following Winter. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

We have one of these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HACIENDA-STEEL-PIZZA-CHIMENEA-CHIMINEA/dp/B004HU48S4
It says currently un available and I think it might be discontinued, but for less than £100 it is a BBQ, pizza oven and patio heater. A quick look at eBay tells me there are similar on thereI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Can I just add a little caution here please? I always stock up in advance for winter and Christmas. Some of the things I buy being chocolate, nuts etc for Christmas hampers when I see them on offer and with a good sell-by date.
This winter I was horrified to be woken by a scratching noise right beneath my bed! A mouse had decided to come in out of the cold and help himself to my store. Apparently the smell of chocolate is one of their favourite things and nuts another. (He'd bypassed the kitchen) Fortunately we did get rid but it was a really uncomfortable time with all food having to be locked away constantly and cupboards and surfaces cleaned and recleaned. (I took a lot of persuading that there'd only been one!)
He'd also been nibbling at the bag of scarves and hats stashed at the back of the wardrobe, it must have looked like a cosy nest...
I hadn't thought about the possibilities of mice until this happened so just thought that I'd warn you to wrap your stock up well! The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

I'm off to town this morning and I'm going to keep a look out for a new warm winter coat and some nice accessories for it, scarf, hat, gloves etc. and also the shoe shops seem to be having sales so I'm looking our for a nice sturdy pair of smart waterproof winter boots. It's definately the way to aquire warm things by looking at the start of summer, much cheaper even if it is last years colours and styles, they still do thier job!!!0

I love this thread. I always buy out of season my biggest savings being my daughters clothes.
We didn't need our new (to us) winter coats which have now gone into my cupboard.
This year I need to stock up on some basics like hot water bottles so we aren't using as much gas. I miss my coal fire. Just ordered new winter duvets, ours are only fit for dog bedding. I also picked up hats, gloves and scarves at bargain prices.
I always try to stock up foodwise but need to get a handle on my food budget. Nothing living makes it into the house with 2 dogssome treat items would be nice
