Preparing for winter IV
Comments
-
My winter prep is coming along slowly. Yesterday I took up a pair of lined curtains for my bedroom. I took nearly 40" off them! They looked great being floor length, but I couldn't close them in the winter as they blocked the radiator. So after triple checking the length before taking the scissors to them, they are now 54" long and just tuck in behind the radiator
Its only a job thats been on my to do list since 2011 when I realised the problem
:rotfl:
Today we had our first frost and its going to be single figures all day according to the forecast. So I am off out to the shops to get a couple of tension rods to make fleece blinds for the kitchen & bathroom for extra warmth as they're both freezing rooms. I also need to buy a draft excluder for the back door as there is a howling gale blowing through it, so I'll go and have a mooch around the Christmas departments while I'm there. DD has asked me to pick up another fleece mattress protector so that's a trip into town where in theory the shop I bought the last one from has them in stock
I'll get there in the end. Its just finding the money to pay for the stuff which is the problem now.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -

for anyone taking up curtains, remember to shorten from the top, remove tape , undo the gathered cords, cut fabric and re attatch,
Dont hem the bottom, to save messing up ! lol0 -
hope everyone is staying warm, went downstairs to find it had dropped to 13.3C brrrrr and that's when it was at 19.5 before i headed to bed at 1am!
turns out we hit -4 overnight, i suppose i'm glad i had to leave the heat on for a long while last night as a hot water bottle burst in my memory foam bed and i'm having to dry it out (no more of those in bed whilst sleeping, maybe to warm it but not whilst sleeping!) i really need to figure out how to use the timer on my boiler
a question, with the timer thingy that's built in, how does it know the time it's starting from ie how does it know that it's say noon so that when i change the little pins it comes on at the right time, also is it pins out or pins in that mean using those times? it's been so long since i have used a thermostat like this i can't remember with my storage heated flat i just turned the hot water heater on for a few hours before needing it (super insulated didn't need to run it much) so i haven't a clue really
i will say i don't miss much about the states but i do miss the nice thermostats where you go turn a knob to a temperature on the dial and presto that's it
i'm gonna seek out the volksa handbook online though i don't honestly have high hopes, the builders left the one that came with the boiler and it's useless! it has about 2 paragraphs in a very thick book about how to use the boiler the rest is how to install it, yeah great help guys!0 -
Confuzzled - it's not just in the states that they have nice easy thermostats you know... if you're renting, maybe have a word with your landlord about needing proper instructions for the controls, or getting better ones put in. My new ones are going in shortly (I hope!) and will allow me to set heating and hot water separately for 4 periods a day, different each day, different temps at different times of day, override from the thermostat for heating, and tell it when I'm on holiday...0

If it's the type I'm thinking of then it should spin when you twist it (the dial / unit with the pins on). There should be a little indicator / line somewhere that doesnt twist with the unit (its usually at the top but these things arent always that sensible), and this will line up with whatever time it is now. The whole twisty bit will turn throughout the day, in time with time, and this is how the unit knows the time. Just wait til you're on the hour at some point and then line it up with the correct time on the dial
This is a very convoluted reply, I'm having issues explaining it! Let me know if I'm being ridiculously unclear!!September 2016 GC £21.37/£1200 -

On mine, which is a different brand to yours, pins in means using those times.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...

I've chosen some fabric from aggypanthus' site she posted about on here, question is do I buy the 5 metres I need, cost £25, or do I buy 10 metres, £40, which works out cheaper per metre, and use the rest for something else? I have a tatty old double sheet that I'm going to use as lining, plenty curtain hooks, just need to buy some track.
