Aggypanthus, this is what I was thinking of getting, the doorframe is about 90 x 210 cm, so was thinking either double width x 2.5 m would make a well gathered curtain, or 1.5 widths would make a reasonable curtain. First method would use 10 metres, second would use 7.5 metres and have plenty left for making other things. Need something fairly neutral, colour-wise.

I think we are sorted here. They had some ice grips for shoes in home bargains today, 99p each. And those adjustable snow shovels. But what I really wanted was a boot tray. I bought one a couple of months ago, but DS has pinched it for his lego. Which is fab, means fewer pieces escape under the sofa etc, but I would like one to keep in the porch.

Other than that, we have some essentials in store, warm clothes and blankets, thermal blinds and curtains everywhere and lots of insulation. I haven't got winter bedding plants (and may not bother) but the summer stuff is out and in the compost bin, and the bulbs are in. Lawn is a little tufty but hasn't been dry long enough to cut. When the trees are all empty I'll go round with the leaf blower thingy.

    And now, to hibernation!

I would be cautious , it seems to me, it might be a bit thin for a real effective door curtain, even when lined, Are you familiar with fabric types per se? why not send for a sample first, they are good and fast at sending them . the price per m is average for cotton, have you looked at the bargain rolls sold by the piece?

I've chosen some fabric from aggypanthus' site she posted about on here, question is do I buy the 5 metres I need, cost £25, or do I buy 10 metres, £40, which works out cheaper per metre, and use the rest for something else? I have a tatty old double sheet that I'm going to use as lining, plenty curtain hooks, just need to buy some track.

As my mum would say, "never buy more than you need. It's a false economy."

I would stick with the £25 for the job you wanted to do. To spend almost double the original cost and then having to come up with another project to justify the extra cost...? Don't bother.

Our living room curtains (on the patio doors) are a really silly length, so I can't buy ready made linings. I have read on here about people lining with fleece material, is that safe? If so, how simple is it? Could I just use safety pins to fix it on? When I sew it tends to go wrong (one curtain is now 2 inches too short, the other is still about 3 inches too long!).
