2 of my 3 door curtains up and 1 of my 3 blinds up and 2 of my 3 external doors also have draught brush things on.. 4 for 3 in B&Q so I grabbed those and some of the reflective stuff for the boys radiator!

I actually feel like we made progress today.. I also got up the 2nd curtain in the girls room which I needed to sew for 3 years.. I feel like a weight lifted getting that frog done!

  • Hi! I'm feeling very depressed at the moment. We finally had a new vent fitted at the front the house this summer so that we could have our gas fire reconnected (it was disconnected a few years ago as the old vent didn't meet the updated requirements). I now wish I hadn't! The wind howls through there and the room is colder than ever. It's currently 15 degrees in the livingroom (19-20 in other rooms) so I dread to think what the place will be like when the cold weather arrives :( Is there anything I could do to minimise the effects that isn't dangerous?

It sounds like it isn't fitted properly.. the whole idea of the vent is to take the fumes away from the room the fire is in, if the air is coming into the room it is bringing those fumes with it, it is therefore not fitting properly.. you need to get it seen by a gas fitter. Look out for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning too.. you do not want to risk your life or that of your children.

Thanks pigpen. Unfortunately it was the gas fitter who put it in for me. I rang him today about it and he thinks it's because it's so high up that it's causing the 'draft'. It's 4 ft off the floor on the outside as our house is raised up higher than the garden. I'm gutted. I'm thinking we could try and find a tall plant or two to use as a windbreak out front but that'll cost us more money again :( I'm sat here almost in tears because it just feels like I've left the front door open. The heating has been on for half hour and the thermometer next to me is still saying 15.5

Home from a break to a leaky roof, got the roofer coming tomorrow to have a look. Just tried to put the central heating on and it's not working. We really need a new boiler but was hoping it would last through the winter. We may have to have a rethink.

We got straight back into our winter preps. We are replacing the laminate in the boys room so have chosen a carpet, we will be measured up on Thursday. Also going to hang up some curtains, the wooden blinds just don't keep the room cosy.

    Off to research boilers.

Well done pigpen, I've been trying to get a curtain up at front and back door for years in the end I had to put cup hooks on internal doorframes and I put an old broom/mop handle across then hung a single quilt in the space could slide it back in the day or take it down this year I don't have the spare quilts :( so I need to get moving and sort the curtains then hopefully one of my boys will drill the wall for me I'm no good at heights even on a chair I get wobbly

I've got a reflective mat at the back of one radiator that's in the living room need to do the bedrooms x2 and the box room did you get the reflective stuff in B&Q? , I'm thinking of putting the airerx3 in there and opening the window but closing the door either that or the dehumidifier opening the window is free :D

We've swapped bedrooms so many times in the last few years due to size of rooms and ages my youngest is 17 on 17 dec yikes that makes me feel old hopefully we won't need to swap again
it does feel good when you manage to cross something off the to do list we've actually got carpets in the bedrooms this year thanks to my lovely son who gave me and youngest our birthday pressies early well he knows me he decided something I needed was the best and we did get a good bargain 12x12ft £34 and mine was 13x12 same price just need some glue from £land to do a join won't see it under wardrobe but if I glue it to floorboards it won't move

you've got me thinking about a curtain in my room too I haven't had a bedroom for ages I 've borrowed my daughters sewing machine so I've no excuses i'll give myself 2 weeks to do them got to find some in my stash and alter them and maybe make some matching covers for some cushions on the sofa/bed mmm sounds good now just got to find the energy to do it been so tired lately not sure if it's the cold weather or me?

hope the girls like their new curtains don't forget to fix a fleece behind I've just used safety pins last year and never took them off they kept the strong sunlight out in the day badly needed when I get migraine

gosh didn't mean to ramble so much I've no one in RL to share these little things with

From what I can gather it's due to the type of fire you have, I am no gas fitter, but I think it's a balanced flue fire under 7kw output does not need any vent.

All other gas fires need a vent as they burn the oxygen in the room.

It seems a shame the fitter didn't explain that to you before he fitted the fire and the vent.

Managing to keep heating off (or to a minimum) as OH and SS are working shifts. I've settled in the living room (well insulated even though its laminate, I did the floor myself :D) with a couple of jar candles on and a big cardigan on and its nice and toasty. My only problem is trying to dry washing, any tips?
