DD woke to wet windows the past 2 mornings. That's what I get for putting the dehumidifier in another room I guess. :( Its back in there and is filling up quickly again.

In my room I had a more mystifying problem, the insides of the window had steamed up. I don't mean the room side, I mean in between the two panes of glass, the outside pane was steamed up when the sun shone on it.:huh: Anyone have any ideas what it could be caused by? I'm guessing I need to call my landlady about it. This should be fun to explain as English isn't her first language and she quite often doesn't understand what I'm trying to explain. :(

its when the seal has gone and the gas has escaped from between the panes

I suspect the seal between the double glazing panes has gone.

Double glazing works with two panes of glass and a sealed gap between them , if the seal goes then moisture enters and when the sun shines it heats up and causes steam.

Most double glazing firm will re-seal it, but I have no clue what the cost will be.

The double glazed unit is blown.

By this I mean the double glazing is made with 2 bits of glass and sealed airtight to insulate from outside. If you have condensation in between the panes it means the seal has gone as moisture has got inside. So in effect, the double glazing is only acting as single glazing.

It will just need the glass measuring up and a new piece made and fitted, I would let your landlady know as soon as possible. It's a fairly cheap and straightforward job.

Just to hijack the thread, sorry peeps, but have you noticed the 'new' raid is less effective? I used to just have one toxic fog job done. Now the wasps seem to get all aggressive revengeful mode and the flies seem to be doing that warped buzzing thing for ages.

Mines stilleffective.. spray.. bug buzzes on the sill/floor ad I beat it with the tin.

Nicki.. it sounds like the seals have gone on the double glazed units and they need replacing.. just the glass bit not the frames.

My landlady is going to love me :o I need the oven fixing (I pay and she'll refund me & has been on the to do list for over a year now), a couple of windows replacing due to the seals going, the back gate fixing, smoke alarms replacing, and I'm sure there's more. :( Thats on top of the fact she had both roofs repaired this year (one twice, but thats her own fault for getting a cowboy in!), a chimney capped and the back door fixed. I swear this house is falling apart around my ears!

Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!
  • Hello. I've not been in 'Preparing for Winter' before.

I def need to spend less on gas this winter. My energy payments went up to £178 a month! My loft has since been insulated, however its quite an old house with high ceiling and is still single glazed.

Anyway, you know those silver blankets they give out to people at the end of marathons? Well I have some of those and I want to use them to keep the heat in the bedroom at night. Anyone done this before? (I don't want to stick them over the window permanently, or have to mess about with them everyday. I might sew them inside a blind? Or cover some big cardboard sheets and just pop them over the window at night?

Still haven't done massive amounts yet, but made a small start. Have plenty of boots and coats, have put up curtain at conservatory door. Some tinned and dried food in, 4 months cat litter,de-icer and screen wash, emergency car shovel from Asba for a fiver, blanket in car and snow shoe grippers. Organised plumber to come service boiler and heating.

Need to get more bulbs and batteries in,torches, bloke to sort outside security light, have a really good sort out of freezer (have chicken casseroles and beef joints, bread, butter already in). And can't remember what else right now without looking at list.

Oh and have staple-gunned thick plastic sheeting to side of shed that has warped so rain and snow can't get in plus broken window.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
