  • Does anyone know where you can buy the popper duvets from? I brought our last one about 5 years ago & they wash up well, However I think ours is really on its way our now and would love to get another before the winter.

(Its x2 duvets, 1 summer, 1 for the chilly evenings then you can attach to two together to make a winter one?? )

Even though I’m making preparations to this coming winter, I feel that nothing is suitable for the cold nights a head. I know the calor gas is going to cripple us this year, But our home is bitter in the winter, Like a furnace in the summer.
I’ve also double checked our flask & OH winter lunch packs so he can take soups ect to work.

Hoping to nip out during the week or next weekend to get the OH’s works bits that’s urgent.
I’m also on the hunt for some doggy jumpers for the pooches. Ideally I would like to get some from charity that way, our money is supporting other’s in need, But it seems impossible to get in there early enough.
    Future goals:
    Become debt free.
    Beat Depression.
    Be happy & healthy

I know Ar*gos also did them & Tesc0 Direct - maybe also Dun*elm mill? Also keep an eye on Ama*zon

Deben*ams, John*lewis, M&S will certainly have them but would imagine they'd be more expensive there http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_312001711780SKNG_-1 (and this was a LOT cheaper than some!)
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

Evening all, I haven't really ever done a lot of winter prep but this year I am going for it as cheaply as possibly.

Our front room curtains are very thin and not quite long enough so I will be lining those with the Ikea fleeces, hoping to send my Mam for them so I am not tempted to buy more items whilst i'm there!! I am also going to line the curtain we have at the font door as it is about 5 inches too small so I am going to out the extra on the bottom with fleeces.

I am going to use space blankets which I have found 2 for £1.99 on ebay and pinching cardboard boxes from work I will be putting these behind all radiators, I did 2 last year but will make sure the rest get done this year.

Sorting out youngest daughters bedroom yesterday I found some old fleece baby blankets so I plan on sewing them together to make a bigger blanket. We already have fleeces for when we are sitting so no need to buy anymore of those.

Need to replenish thermals for hubby, I don't need them as work in an extremely hot care home and the girls will both be at school/nursery and it is always too hot in there.

I think both myself and hubby will need a winter coat if I can find one cheaply enough, youngest is about to turn 3 and she has 3 age 2-3 coats so not sure if we will get away with them or not. Eldest is 6 and she has a 5-6 coat and a 7-8 coat so hoping that will be fine for her. Need the usual hats, scarfs and gloves.

Going to buy a couple of airers from Ebay which are suitable to hang over the banister on the landing to help dry clothing without having to either block all the radiators or put the dryer on, unfortunately we have just put our DD up as we weren't covering our gas and elec usage so we are -£65 as of yesterday although they get another £110 from us on the 28th but it means we won't have much built up as we go into winter.

There will be plenty more that I could do but the pennies won't allow so I will do these main things first and then see what else I can manage.

Loving reading this thread with all your ideas so thank you very much x

Eek princess I hope you can find a cheaper one than that!

You could just do what we do and have a thick winter one and thin summer one? Those suction storage bags (Hoover sucks air out) are super for keeping them in smaller spaces and prevents them getting dusty while waiting to be used. A winter duvet of 13.5tog in Wilkos is £12.50 and u suspect a 4.5tog in the spring will be less. HTH

Spring summer lurker and come out of hibernation toward the end of summer... I love this time of year and have noticed that my chickens are starting to go into bed earlier as nights are drawing in by 8:30pm now..... ohh exciting, I love prepping for winter. I went off to the tip today and saw someone throwing away an extra long beach mat that was silver foil like on the underside.... oooh I'll have that for behind the radiators I thought... hahahah!!! Anyway they were only too happy to hand it over.... I can get at least 3 radiators out of that one mat. am stocking up on porridge oats for my chickens as in autumn and winter they love a porridge and corn supper to keep them warm through the night.. My two teens are growing so it's a given they will need all new winter things, but hoping I can pass on older ones to the younger one and save a bit..... OOhh i can feel a hot chockki coming on,and I love it!!! Happy prepping all xx

You are so lucky - at our tip, nothing is 'allowed' to be removed. It breaks my heart sometimes when I see what people throw away. A really miserable bunch that run it. My friend in Devon says that at their tip they have a shop that sells 'ok' stuff for charity - why can't this happen all over. Strange world.

So love reading this thread (how bad is that)

Anyway, I don't have radiators but emmad5689, I noticed that Aldi has these coming on Thursday. Not a bad price 2 for £1.99:

    Best of luck
I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.

Thriftkitten, love the idea of porridge for the chickens in winter. How do you make it?

Today I have washed OH's winter jacket and it is now drying on the line. I will take my winter jacket to the dry cleaners later on since it has not been washed for the last 3 winters.

The biggest achievement this weekend has been that I have finally made my own first draught excluder for the front door. Once everyone is at home it will lie in front of the front door on the inside. I am chuffed with myself how easy it was to make. I used an old trouser leg and stuffed it with unloved clothes and then sealed it with 2 cotton laces from an old top that I have I have tied into a bow.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j
