Mmm, this is something I have been thinking about. I live in a rural area - 50 mile round trip to the nearest Tesco or Asda - so there is the cost of petrol to take into account. Local shops and markets are expensive sadly and I also find that the more often I shop the more I spend.

My second freezer is 20 years old so its not going to last much longer then I can get an A rated one.

Anyhow sun is shining here so washing out on the line. I have had the heating on for an hour this morning because my son isn't feeling great but hopefully that will be it for today. Tea is in the slow cooker - elec monitor says 7p at the moment - washing machine is on but not much else.

Hi, re the shopping, can you not get a home delivery once a month and do meal planning?

I just checked the readings for the whole week and divided by 7...

    Currently I'm using per day:
    - electricity (day time): 4.1 kWh
    - electricity (night time): 0.7 kWh
    - gas: 16.3 kWh

No gas heating being used (except water). Temperature inside the house 20'C currently.

This is good. Is it for a family or just one person.

I'm pleased with my energy usage to be honest. It won't be that good when I start heating the house and it starts getting dark early.

My energy bills didn't bother me much until the last greedy increase just before winter. I've been on BG standard tariff for 8 years. Only last week I decided to switch for the first time. I'm doing it for two reasons: I don't mind paying less, I don't like gas and electricity accounts showing on my credit file. I think the later bothers me more ;)
  • Hi guys,

These tips are gold dust. My boyfriend and I have just moved into our first flat and I'm desperately looking for ways to reduce gas/elec costs.

Switched to first utility fix tarriff yesterday from First Utility (just in time) but have had some trouble working out usage so far.

Moved in on 1st, readings were 35896 and 14280.25 today they're at 35991 and 1428.73. Does that sound right.

No heating yet and have gone round like a madman making sure nothing is on standby. After reading this thread though wanted to ask, our combi boiler is permanently on standby, if i switch off and then only on before bath/shower will this stop over/hob (anything else apart from central heating) working??

One of the bold figures is missing or has an extra digit. Which is gas and which is electric? Also is your gas meter metric or imperial (if it says m3 on the front, it's metric)
A combi boiler supplies hot water on demand only when you turn a tap on. Similarly, it will only power the central heating when the main timer for it switches it on, which I assume it has. So unless it has a pilot light (do any combi boilers have a pilot light?), you'll save nothing by switching it off.

Total per day: 20kWh (winter), 12kWh (summer)
Per Month: 600kWh (winter) 400kWh (summer)

Mainly due to lighting and use of tumble drier over the winter but washing line during the summer.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Oops sorry its 14287.47 (gas) and 35991 (elec). Gas is metric. We don't have the central heating on at the moment but there are 4 pilot lights for energy and comfort settings.

So that works out at about 5.3kWh electricity per day and 4.5kWh gas per day. Which doesn't sound too bad to me, but obviously depends on your lifestyle.
Gas usage will leap up once you put the heating on. If it's only being used for hot water at the moment then you wouldn't expect high figures. Big users of electricity are anything that generates heat, such as an electric shower or oven. That looks like a pretty good average though, so you must be doing something right! :)

Our average is 49 kwh per day, no gas, rural area.
Fairly big house, but heating has now become a real problem.
recent rises mean we do not use the electric heating , only local oil heaters. Hoping the Green Deal may offer us a solution.
  • Surely this is way too low though?? With these figures it means our costs according to first utility's unit prices would be:

    Average annual bill £386

    Electricity
Standing Charge pence per day 17.85
Unit Rate pence per KWh 9.813

    Gas
Standing Charge pence per day 19.74
Unit Rate pence per KWh 3.596

Obviously without heating but still even in summer can gas/elec be 32.16 in a largeish one bed flat?

How much do you think I can expect it to increase with the heating on for 3-4 hours in the evening?

    Thanks for any advice!
