Joseph, £127 for gas and electric. I think this is around what the average users are paying.
It can be brought down with some more effort.

I pay £66.12 DD for gas and electric. This is for 4 adults.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
  • Moving Help - try to fill the oven if you have it on.
Buy a slow cooker, these are cheap to run.

The most costly things in your place will be anything that heats up. Kettle, hot water, CH, tumble dryer and cooker.

Switching energy supplier can take 5 - 6 weeks.
I hope you moved onto a fixed rate in time?

Yes managed to move to First Utility fixed rate the day before it was pulled, bit of a pain though they said the 60 cancellation fees would be waived if we moved house before March 2014 then was told by another operator this isn't true. Was promised someone would ring me on Friday to see if they can make an exception but heard nothing yet.

They did try to get me to cancel my switch, seemed very suspicious until it was pulled the next day! Either way with the 40 from simplyswitch even if we do move and can't take it with us (which we should be able to) then its only a 20 loss which I'm sure will be covered by the lower rates anyway.

I guess we use the kettle quite a bit but we're careful with showers and only do a wash weekly so that we can use the clothes horse. Haven't touched the tumble dryer or dishwasher yet and not planning on it.

The only thing with a slow cooker is a like to bake, luckily though we mainly use the hob for cooking so not too worried about oven costs.
  • Sorry Chameleon, I did nt realise it was a long running post, I was referring to the original poster Myright and his/her extremely low electric useage of 1 unit a day

Ok thanks. When a thread's been running for several weeks and becomes several pages long it's quite usual for people just to go directly to the first "unread post" so won't see (and will most likely have forgotten) what was previously posted, and by whom, so quotes are very useful when referring to a specific post :)

So that works out at about 5.3kWh electricity per day and 4.5kWh gas per day. Which doesn't sound too bad to me, but obviously depends on your lifestyle.
Gas usage will leap up once you put the heating on. If it's only being used for hot water at the moment then you wouldn't expect high figures. Big users of electricity are anything that generates heat, such as an electric shower or oven. That looks like a pretty good average though, so you must be doing something right! :)

    Hi victor2,

I was just wondering how you worked out how much kWh I used a day. Just confirmed with First Utility that with the fix I will be charged a 60 cancellation fee even if we move house, so trying to work out what my savings will actually be.

Very tricky as they've now pulled the fixed deal so it doesn't come up on any of the comparison sites.

    Thanks in advance!

I have a supposed new economy boiler...its a Nibe electric boiler! New house build so come with the house. They tell you to leave it on permenantly for most cost effective use...if I leave it on just in summer for hot water it uses around 13-15 just for priveledge of hot water hence i do not have running hot water most of the time....for heating in the winter it uses 28-35 units a day....hence im freezing cold with no heating.
No kids so luckily I just have me to keep warm by wrapping up.
The only gas I have is 4 rings on the hob...my DD a month for gas is £1!!!

Just looing at changing supplier but I'm so confused. I'm with southern electric at min on Iplan for electric but non of the comaprison sites give Iplan as an option for the current plan I'm on.

We are on Economy 7 with a key meter and I pay around £1000 per year. 2 person household, we work 6 days a week and only home in the evenings plus sundays. The joys of a key meter I guess (from previous tenants). Can't wait to move somewhere with gas and be able to pay by direct debit.

Moved in on 1st, readings were 35896 and 14280.25 today they're at 35991 and 1428.73. Does that sound right.

Oops sorry its 14287.47 (gas) and 35991 (elec). Gas is metric. We don't have the central heating on at the moment but there are 4 pilot lights for energy and comfort settings.

    Hi movinghelp

With electricity it's easy, as you may have realised. Just take the difference between the two readings (which is kWh) and divide by the number of days covered. So in your case it's 35991 - 35896 = 95kWh. Divide by 18 (the days between the readings) and you get 5.277 kWh per day.

Gas is slightly more complicated as your meter reads cubic meters, so you used 7.22 m3. I multiplied that by 11.135 to get kWh (that number is a good guide but it can vary slightly as the gas properties change), which gives 4.466 kWh per day over 18 days.
Just multiplying your gas meter reading differences by 11 will give you a pretty good idea of the kWh you've used though.

Thanks so much for this. Reason I was asking is the unit rates she's given me are: 9.749 (elec) and 3.606 (gas) but when I multiply these figures by 5.277 kWh per day and 4.466 kWh per day it seems the cost should be 20 pounds a month not 30.

Does this discrepancy have anything to do with the standing charge pence per day (21p and 23.84p) respectively.

    Indeed it does.
Include the standing charge and the above gives £34.19 a month.
But also remember that the gas figure in particular does not include any winter related usage. Once your heating is on, your gas usage will increase dramatically.
You could not expect that amount per month to cover your annual usage though, which is the idea behind monthly direct debit payments, but not a concept that all suppliers follow....:)
