Completely different circumstances, but with an older style gas boiler, hot water tank and gas hob (but electric oven), we averaged 14.9 kWh of gas per day in June and July this year, but 104.3 kh per day in January and February when the heating was on for a few hours each morning and about 6 hours at night. So a 7 fold increase in our case.
Obviously, how much gas you use for heating depends on many things, including the outside temperature, what temperature you are heating the house to, how good your insulation is etc.
The best way to get an idea of your own usage is to read your meters regularly, such as weekly, then see how much gas you use at different times of the year.
I find that our electricity usage is pretty steady throughout the year, with only a slight increase in winter, when lights are obviously on for longer periods. However, using energy efficient lighting minimises the cost impact of that.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I do mealplan and get a Tesco delivery once a fortnight. I just dont think I would have the cupboard space for a full months shop - and the freezers are pretty full when I do a fortnightly shop anyway. I am careful to never waste food and I freeze all leftovers which takes up a bit of room.
But thanks for the suggestion!0 -
Sorry Joseph 1972 but your post made me laugh. I twitter on at my husband about kwhs and average usage and his eyes glaze over. Its all relative I guess but we have been paying £72 a month, this is likely to go up quite a bit now we have ended our fixed price deal.0

Hello Joseph, Looking back at your posts you said you pay £71 per month just for electric. Do you have any gas?The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0

Fab, so just keep an eye on the oven I think and start checking how much the costs for central heating work out as?
The only other things I can think use elec is the laptops, we don't have a tv but our laptops are almost always plugged in when we're at home alone with mobiles charging..
Would this use much?
Also does anyone have any idea how long switching takes? Made a mistake earlier when I said we switched to First Utility, we went from Southern Electric and they said 6-8 weeks. Only got round to it after living here for about 3 weeks so means 2 months will be on the higher tarriff which is a bit of a bummer.
Oh well still managed to get in the day before they pulled the offer and will hopefully save enough for all the hassle to be worth it over the winter months.0 -
Moving Help - try to fill the oven if you have it on.
Buy a slow cooker, these are cheap to run.
The most costly things in your place will be anything that heats up. Kettle, hot water, CH, tumble dryer and cooker.
Switching energy supplier can take 5 - 6 weeks.
I hope you moved onto a fixed rate in time? The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -

yes but its only for hot water and heating we pay 56 a month for gas its my electic useage thats gone up since the meter change i want from prepay to normal0 -
Thats an extremely low useage Myright, I take it you dont have a fridge/freezer. I hope your meter is working properly and that the previous tenant has nt done a bit of tampering. There is a way to slow the meter down. I am out all day, 6 days a week 7 am to 6pm and still manage to get through approx 10 units a day. do you read a book by candlelight for your evening entertainment ?0

To whom are you referring? A quote would have been useful.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
