    Just sayin! :)

    Yes you're just saying!

Not really any of your business but something I have been perfectly open about on here.

I had post peuperal psychosis after the births of both of my children recovered and remained well for eleven years.

Then I became ill again and was given a diagnosis of hypo mania.

Recovered and returned to work and then became ill again a couple of years later and have now been given a diagnosis of Bipolar 1.

I am aware there is evidence of a genetic link with this condition (my mother had it and so does my brother) however..... As far as I am aware there is absolutely no evidence of any connection between the condition and the consumption of shepherds pie.

I do take a part in a lot of medical research however so if they do decide to do a study into the possibility of any links I'll keep you informed of the progress.

It's easy to work out - just look at the University league tables.

My daughter is at Leeds - got offers from all the universities she applied to in England which were all in the Russell group and also an offer from Edinburgh.

I think you'll find that has to pay for their accommodation as well. To think anything else is quite ridiculous.

Yes it does! 5.5K for "expenses" would be rather too generous! After accommodation it works out at around £60/wk ish for food, books, bike repairs...etc etc. I like to think it's a generous amount, I'm sure he could live on less but I want him to have a good time at university as I did in the golden days of grants. Well perhaps not quite that good, or I'd need to give him more :D The loan is about 3.5K which (very) roughly covers accommodation.

So OP - £65 after accommodation is fine. Just don't expect him to spend it in exactly the proportions you plan!

    You are joking right?

So only the poor people go to lower league table universities? And only rich people go to higher league table universities?

    You total and utter snob!

    Seriously?

Do you guys read nothing other than posts on MSE?

Why do you think so much time and effort and government money has gone in to trying to widen university access to students from lower socioeconomic groups?

Or maybe you don't know that a lot of time, effort and government money has gone in to trying to widen access....

I went to university. I went to a "lower" league university and there were people from all sorts of background, not just poor people.

As for your comment "widen university access", that is entirely different from saying that those that do go to university go to higher ones if they are more well or and lower ones if they are poor.

    Ridiculous comment.

The widening access agenda has very little to do with your statement that people with money go to "better universities" than those from poorer backgrounds.

Having been involved with the Aimhigher programme for many years I am well aware of its agenda. Unfortunately, the fact that it was one of the earliest programmes to be cut by this government indicates exactly the amount of " time, effort and government money" that they are prepared to put into it.

  • Some of our kids get hardly anything in the way of student loans and grants and we, as parents, are expected to contribute large amounts of money

A student whose parents earn less than £25k gets more than £7k in loans and grants. A students whose parents have an income of £65kish get half that. So students who should get money from their parents but dont are at a serious disadvantage.

My son is starting university this weekend.

I have budgetted for £65 per week for him , after the halls are paid for

    I'm thinking:
    £25 food
    £15 entertainment
    £10 books / stationery
£2 mobile £4 travel £3 clothes £4 christmas and birthday presents for family

    That seems very low.

Here are student living costs estimated by Universities.

Oxford Exeter Birmingham Nottingham Trent Bristol Manchester Liverpool Sussex Newcastle Reading Bath LSE UCL Cardiff Sheffield Kent Cambridge Edinburgh Hertfordshire Essex

Quite a big difference from your estimate.

    They can't all be wrong!

Just had a conversation with my daughter about the drink drugs and smoking.

She said that the prevelance of drug taking in Leeds is extremely high and and a very high percentage smoke too.

She has been drinking far too much herself this week and is hoping she can cut back for the sake of her health; she feels very low after drinking too much.

She said she is looked at very strangely when she turns down the chance of free drugs!

What subject is she taking? I think this might have a huge influence. I tend to mix more with sports/health/medical students which do tend to lead a healthier lifestyle.
