Would you be prepared to help with an MSE comping experiment? To tick or not to tick?

Since starting years ago:-
A: You hardly ever tick for marketing
I've won virtually nothing this year compared to regular and big wins previous years, despite entering a similar number of comps.
For the past few months I have tried another experiment of filling entries manually in case the competitions now have secret hidden fields that are filled by form fillers, it hasn't made any difference, still no wins!0 -
I've been comping since May this year and I always choose no marketing unless I have to in order to enter the comp. Most of my wins are in my sig.
I like the idea of this thread, it's good to know what fellow compers doBack to comping after a 3-year hiatus :j0 -
Definitely "A" for me - I don't really like the ones where you have to suscribe in order to enter0

C: You [STRIKE]nearly[/STRIKE] always tick for it - but never for 3rd party and never for anyone who wants contact other than by email"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you. "

The information will not be of any statistical use.
Let's say at the end you have this information
Winners who won with a tick = 420
Winners who won without a tick = 210
Clearly winners who tick do better - Wrong
"Tickers" could have entered 3 times more competitions than non-tickers but they only won twice as often.
So winners who don't tick do better - Wrong
80% of all entrants to the competitions were "non-tickers" but they only won 33% of the prizes.
For any given competition you would need to know how many entries there were, the break down between tickers and non-tickers and if the winner was a ticker or not. Even then, given the small number of prizes most competitions have on offer, individual results would be meaningless and you would probably need to collate 1,000's of competition results to have any meaningful data.
If the draw is carried out by a reputable company then a "tick" should only be an advantage if the T&C's say it is (earn an extra entry for sign-up etc).
I sign-up only if I am interested and have not noticed any outstanding success from doing so (just a handful of wins from a 140+ total)
Hi, thanks for that, but I don't agree that it won't be any use. All the other factors involved should be fairly evenly distributed between the three groups. If one group has a higher number of wins/entries or anything else, it shouldn't matter because we'll end up with average/mean scores.
Anyway, we did say that it won't be an exact science, but it will be fun and interesting. If necessary, I'll go back to my university text books and calculate statistical probabilities, but that was sooo long ago that it would hurt - big. PLEASE don't make me do thatBut seriously thanks for your input :T

unless i have to for entering, or very occasionally if it is something that interests me, and i'm happy with my wins x0 -

I pretty much always opt out, so far have been lucky and had 1+ win a month.Wishing you all good luck!

I have often asked myself this question. About 18 months ago, I started entering loads of comps from here each day making sure that I opted out of marketing each time to protect my personal email account from spam, newsletters etc. No wins after 6 months, so I gave up comping.
Six months ago, I returned to these comps but this time, I registered a comping email specifically so that I receive all the newsletters from the sponsors - I just skip through them to ensure that I haven't won anything, but of course I haven't!I wish I had thought of a better user name as this makes me sounds greedyIt was meant more tongue-in-cheek.

A - hardly ever tick for marketing
and most definitely opt out of tele-marketing, or don't bother entering if phone no. is required and there is no opt-out or privacy policy is vague.0 -
A: You hardly ever tick for marketing
Sometimes I will opt in for newsletters but it is a no go when post and phone are concerned.
What I have won is in my signature0
