Well it seems there could be an upper limit of around three hours?
After continuous connection for over 3 hours i was kicked off, so i went back in again to see if the connection would hold.
No problem, held it for another one hour or so before using it to post this.

A few times pages appeared to stall, suggesting maybe a bottleneck somewhere, but connection wasn't lost and the page fully loaded after a few minutes.
i was only guessing when i said perhaps not too many on Geoisp.
Perhaps at certain times it may be quite busy.

Is your problem only at certain times of the day, or whenever you try?
if it's whenever, then it does sound like it may be line related.
Any noise on the line? tried plugging modem directly into master socket with front plate removed (if you have one of those).
If you dial 17070 and try the quiet test, you can listen for any crackle or whatever.

i had a hunch it may have been their DNS servers, but in all honesty i couldn't really fault them.

You could try using fixed DNS, just to see if it makes any difference for you.
Don't know if you have any public IPs to try?
If not, try these from good old Pipex
    158.43.240.4
    158.43.240.3
just go into tcp/ip properties for that connection to change them, of course.

Well, i suppose all this shows that you should be able to stay online for longer, so may be worth fiddling around with a few checks.
    Good Luck :)

    Thanks Jay.

I don't think the problem is confined to any particular time frame, though it seems to be working ok just at the moment!!!

I was under the impression that there is supposed to be a limit of two hours, but that would be signified by a message - on telling it to continue there would never again be such a message. However, in the past I have been connected for over two hours without getting such message!

If I get continuing problems I'll try fiddling around and see if it makes any difference.

    Thanks again.
  • Hi,
Wasn't sure whether to start a new thread on this, so I didn't.

Can anyone confirm 1899.com still works with the Geo number? BT are charging me the national rate and if so I'm going to ask for a refund, but it would be good to know if I've got it wrong first.

I've just been putting the 1899 prefix in front of the 020 number so it appears all in one in the (Windows XP) "connect" box, is that right?

If you use the access code 1899 from your BT line before the number you are calling, the traffic does not goes through BT and they cant charge you.
  • could some comfirm the number etc for the connection

    The number for geoisp is:

    02081149845

To use it for 18185, the number dialled is 1818502081149845

Obviously I first had to be registered with 18185, so I would have thought that if you do the same for 1899 it should work.

PS The problems I previously experienced seem to have mostly subsidised now, to within acceptable (though far from perfect) limits – my best guess is that the server has good moments and bad moments.
  • last time i used it, a few weeks ago, the calls appeared on my 1899 account, not on BT
just to check it again, i just rang the number from a 'phone. The modem their end answered, tried to connect, then dropped the call.
i then checked my 1899 itemised billing and sure enough the call was there, so nothing to do with BT.

Incidentally, i see that both geoisp and its parent site, coulomb.co.uk have pulled the websites.
The google cache of the coulomb site is Nov 7, so fairly recent.

This might mean that the dialup service could follow shortly?
best to be prepared and have a standby, just in case :)

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Just wondered if I should pay my respects to good old GeoIsp who has so faithfully provided a free service that I have used for at least a year, until last week, when it's stopped working..

Has any one else noticed anything?

Does it still work for you?

if so it would be good to know.

thank you and thank you geoisp
