Aren't they supposed to give people notice if they intend to change the call rate? What's the best legal argument to use?

I don't think they have changed the call rate - it has always been that voice calls qualify for the 5.5p/min rate.

The only "legal" argument you could try is "custom and practice" - as you say that you have used this number previously.

Maybe the best thing would be to ask for a credit as you weren't aware of the difference, and won't do it again - telling them your mate has been credited and it's all be done in innocence

The reason you are charged in full is because you are making data calls. The first 60 minutes for 5.5p at E&W is for speech only.Bt have cottoned on.

Avoid this by using the likes of https://www.18185.co.uk . Just 5p connection to call the Geo number stay on as long as you like, call is free.

They don't KNOW it's not a voice call, I could have spent 50 minutes saying "hello?.......Hello?.....will you stop whistling and answer!!!??? HELLO?" :D

Before having BB - I had a 0121 isp number that BT cottoned on to and charged... but I knew it was a loophole

Used it from time to time if BB playing up

Some carrier routed providers don't pick it up :-) but when I used 18866 the quality was very poor for data

    Still works ok on BT/1899
took a couple attempts to connect but then connected at 28.8 Kbps, pages loaded a little sluggish.
Disconnected and tried again, took another couple of attempts but then connected at 44 Kbps, pages loaded very quickly.
Do you have the modem speaker on? can you hear the tones?
The tones sounded very loud and clear at my end, but it still took a couple of attempts to connect each time.

if nothing at all, you could try using your phone to ring the number 02081149845
The modem at the other end should answer with a few tones/whistles before it realises there is no modem your end, then hangs up. At least you would know you are getting through.

Maybe Virgin have blocked the use of 1899, 18185 ect.

Are you trying to connect through such a service?

Only BT have to allow customers to connect to any number.

    Hi

I've been using geoisp to connect to the net (via 18185) for a few months now.

There has always been some random disconnections.

Over the last three or four weeks the connection generally lasts only a few minutes and is then terminated.

Is anyone else have this problem or is it just me?
  • i don't suppose too many people are using Geoisp atm.
so i gave it a whirl for you. Been connected now for well over 2 hours, using 1899.

No disconnects and worked fine for about 1h 45min, then it stayed connected but pages started timing out and showing 'Page cannot be displayed'
    is that what you get?

i started fiddling with DNS server settings, trying to change DNS server while still connected and it seemed to clear things.
Done a fair amount of browsing etc and appear to have downloaded around 9 MB

The connect speed was only 31.2 Kbps but that doesn't appear to be a problem. I have broadband filters on the line which quietens the audio a little, so i have noticed slower connect speeds on dialup with some ISPs.

still connected to post this :)

I didn't know that, would that be because of the growth of broadband?

    Depends.

When I just clicked on Ctrl+Quote to make this reply I got a new tab that said:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:· You are not connected to the Internet. · The website is encountering problems. · There might be a typing error in the address.
    What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

    Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

    More information

I was still connected so I clicked on Refresh but the same thing happened. I tried Refresh again and the page loaded correctly (now been connected for 17 minutes).

At other times I am actually disconnected from the web and have to reconnect. Only 5p a go I know but even that mounts up if it is having to be done every couple of minutes during a longish session such as the one you used in testing this.

No problem at all for my purposes.

Until the last few weeks I was, generally, getting the same results as you have done i.e. just fine. It's only the last month or so that these frequent physical disconnections from the net have been occurring. Sometimes it functions fine: I have now been connected for about 25 minutes but this is my third connection this morning. The first two lasted only a couple of minutes each before disconnecting.

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to look into this for me.
