Are they reasonably well off and very organised? I ask because if I received it I'd think it was a waste of money that could have been spent on something more useful that I actually needed or a pizza delivery for when I didn't have enough hands to cook but I'm not one for 'treating' myself so the same would go for toiletries!

I thought at first it was a lovely gift, but on second thoughts, it is a bad time to give mum all that fattening chocolate when all she wants to do is get rid of the bump (and the rest of the fat we have accumulated during pregnancy) So no, its a gift that I personally would give or appreciate in the long term

Well, this is the thing. It's all down to personal preference and some people love the idea, others don't and it would be the same for anything. I'm not a bit fan of being given boxes of chocolate, like milk tray etc, but that's not because of my figure, it's because I don't like a lot of the fillings.

I'd have far preferred something like that, than the crystal pram someone gave me! It is to share and actually if she's incredibly tired, it might be nice to have something sugary. You don't tend to get tons of chocolates when babies are born anyway.

I think it's a lovely idea. If new mum is bothered about her figure then she's sharing it with hubby anyway. Or I'm sure some grateful visitors will help!

You know your friend better than us op.

It's lovely, but it really depends on your friend.

I had a baby a year ago (her 1st birthday's tomorrow - wow, time goes fast!). I didn't really need or want chocolate for me, but I loved all the little baby presents people gave us - little socks and hats and clothes. So cute!

But I'm not someone who went wild with shopping beforehand. It meant that a really lovely item of baby clothing was appreciated, because I didn't spend that much buying posh baby clothes from the shops.

A little lamaze baby toy would also have been good (again - this is splashing out a bit because babies grow out of their early toys so quickly), or a white noise machine?

  • That's lovely. The other things to consider are the multitude of things that you can't eat when you're pregnant (pate, cheeses, wine etc.) If there's anything they particularly miss that will be appreciated! Alternatively a post natal massage is a welcome treat.

this is so true.... when my mum turns up at the hospital i am hoping she bring a coeur de lion brie bagette :)

And one of those plastic glasses of wine they sell at some M+S shops. And some baked camembert.

Can you tell I've got my first 'freedom' meal planned :rotfl:

OP, I think the chocolates are a lovely idea. Especially if she's planning to breast feed. That energy boost will be lovely for her at 2am when baby demands a feed and she's feeling exhausted.

lol, I placed my order early with my husband. The day I was released from hospital, we had scrambled egg and smoked salmon on toast for lunch, with a cheese course and champagne! :rotfl:

I was dying for some pate, smelly cheese and decent red wine before I delivered my last child, and on my first day home from hospital, my DH came up with the goods. And I didn't enjoy a single mouthful :( Was still recovering from the after effects of a c section and actually would have been just as happy with a nice plain omelette and a cup of tea :)
  • Each to their own, personally always thought that the gifts were really supposed to be for the baby rather than the mum.

If your friends a chocoholic then I am sure it'd be appreciated, if not then you can rarely have enough baby clothes etc either for immediate use or slightly larger sizes for a few months time

I think this is a fantastic present. A little burst of sugar for Mum or Dad can't go wrong to help get over the tiredness!
