Would you appreciate this gift on the arrival of a new baby?

http://www.thorntons.co.uk/product/Gift-Ideas/New-Baby-Gifts/New-Baby-Hamper/pc/2222/c/2387/181.uts

Or would you prefer a different gift?

I have never had children so don't know what kinds of gifts are appreciated on the birth of a little one.

I don't live anywhere close to my friend so cannot help out in any practical way (childcare, cooking a few meals etc) unfortunately.

Any suggestions or comments would be fab! Thanks :)

We don't have children yet. But bought my mates choccies on the birth of theirs and they were much appreciated when they were stuck in hospital after c-section.
Already bought funky baby stuff at baby shower, so I think it's good.x
  • I'd appreciate this at any time! Fab pressie and way better than flowers!
  • I would appreciate any gift as I am not ungrateful lol! Looks lovely. You are a nice friend. It must be nice to receive something for you and not another gift for the baby!
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.

can I be honest? That would be too much chocolate for me. Could you find a nice toiletries hamper to send instead? I loved my bubble baths when I was a new mum (still do in fact) its a good way to unwind when baby is sleeping.
  • That's lovely. The other things to consider are the multitude of things that you can't eat when you're pregnant (pate, cheeses, wine etc.) If there's anything they particularly miss that will be appreciated! Alternatively a post natal massage is a welcome treat.

But for me, it would never be too much chocolate and I'd be thrilled to receive one of those boxes!

You know your friend, is she a chocolate lover?

She does like chocolate yes :) but to be honest I was thinking of this more as a gift for the whole family rather than just her - she has a husband and daughter to share the chocolate with (if she wants to that is :p ) and there is already a toy lamb in the box for the baby.

She has had a C-section and will be home tomorrow or on Friday, hence my delaying as I wanted to have it delivered to their home at a time when I was sure someone would be there to receive it.

Thanks for all your comments so far though and keep them coming!

I'm the opposite to balletshoes - there's no such thing as too much chocolate for me but I really don't like gifts of toiletries because I have really sensitive skin and I don't think I've ever received a toiletry gift that I've been able to use...they sit in a cupboard for months/years and then end up being given away to a friend or charity shop.

OP - if you friend is a chocolate lover like me then I'm sure she'll love the gift. Even if it is a lot of chocolate, I expect she'll be host to a lot of visitors when she gets home with the baby and if it's too much for her to eat on her own then it'll give her something nice to pass around and share with visitors.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
  • I'd have loved it, although I am a bit of a chocoholic :)

I think it's a lovely idea and it means that all the family get to share the gift.
