The ancient classics did not experience philosophy as the mere ‘learning’ or ‘recital’ of others' thoughts and quotations. They originated thought, albeit fledglingly compared to knowledge and comprehension gained since. And so it is with us today, that if we want to find new, basic understanding, we too, from our new vantage point, must go back to original concepts, to fundamentals -- again thinking things out to their original causes. That is what they were trying to do way back then in their own early fashion, and that is the true meaning of philosophy.

  • The original point regarding bank charges is that they are disproportionate in relation to the amout of work required. Recent study came out with a figure of somewhere between 2.50 and 4.00 up to a maximum elsewhere of 12 pounds. If the charges were reasonable and in proportion to the effort ( most of which is computer generated ) people would not have any grounds to claim anything back.

Instead of attacking posters (about who they know nothing) for doing something to get back what they have been overcharged can I suggest that if there is nothing helpful to add then dont post. I am sure that if bank charges are introduced the really clever posters will have sufficient knowledge and suitable credit history to avoid them anyway.

    This really is pathetic.

Why does anything in business need to be proportionate to the amount of work required. Do you work for the minimum wage? How much do you charge for a few templated letters that you probably didnt write yourself? Why do I charge £250 for an hour or two's smoking cessation therapy. Why does a trades man charge say a £50 call out when he lives just round the corner. Why does my accountant charge me a couple of thousand when I do most of the work in producing spreadsheets etc.
Its not just the time and work involved with the arrears theres the wasted money held back in reserve, Theres the capital outlay of computers, buildings, rates, staff, etc.
It is very simple. We have all made mistakes now and again but those of us with a brain learn from them, so we get a £50 charge, Pay it and move on and then make sure we dont get another. The only time you get these charges is when you break the terms and conditions anyway.
Your culture wants to parasite off others rather than creating wealth themselves with whinges like "its not fair". Life never is fair and never has been and never will be.
Once you get that fact past ones brain cell you can move on and do something worthwhile for yourself and the community.
