Id say go for it. If you're anything like me you'll probably find you want to move back, or try something else again, after a few months. You'll probably always have your favourite though, and you might not realise what that is until you're without it/try something different.

    Most likely.

I bought an HTC Desire HD originally, so determined I was not to jump on the apple bandwagon and the spec was better on paper...but holding it up next to an iPhone, it just wasn't as good - so I sent it back and got my iPhone 4 instead.

This time out, I'll do what I always do - try a couple out and see what's best...but, objectively, I can't believe so many people would use android unless it's come pretty far since my last play with it, so I'm not convinced the new iPhone's gonna do enough to keep me :)

I phone 5 will feature a new dock connector. Its not USB.

Effectively everybody's docks, hi-fi's, car adaptors and cables are now made obsolete at the snap of a finger. So now you need to buy these all over again.

It is USB. Sort of. It's USB one end, and a proprietary connector at the other, just like now.

Only difference is that proprietary connect is now smaller. Things won't be instantly obsolete, though, an adaptor will be available.

Anyone who got a 4 or 4S within the first few weeks after the announcement day with O2 - what is the procedure for getting one once all the info is released? (I don't want to queue outside a shop...) Do I just call and say I want one and go on a waiting list? I'm on a simplicity tariff at the moment (which the guy on the phone termed the "waiting for iphone 5 tariff"...)
Based on previous pricing, you'll probably be better off paying full price (£500) to Apple and getting a SIM-only contract for £10-£15 per month. If you get a bundled contract, you're effectively getting an expensive loan for the iPhone and tying yourself into a long contract unnecessarily. Also with a bundled contract the iPhone would be SIM-locked so you couldn't easily switch networks or use local SIM cards abroad to avoid roaming charges.

I don't think there's a way to update the dock connector without breaking backwards compatibility (without the use of an adaptor). The plus with Apple though is they tend to pick a connector and stick with it for a long time so the useful life of your accessories is longer.

That would be hilarious :-) I would absolutely love to see that, I'd keep my 3GS for another year just to see the look on the tech journalists' faces at the launch.
"Announcing, the new iPhone F...................OUR-S-X!! It's got a slightly better camera! And the back is silver now!"

I hadn't thought about buying it outright but it probably works out cheaper as I have every intention of keeping it for 2-3 years. And I do have the money for it. Are the phones available to buy outright from the word go?

I have a friend who works as a buyer at Apple and he won't tell me anything, boring sod :-) I even tried to arrange a social engagement with him on the 12th and 21st and he said he couldn't as he had to babysit. Didn't specify what though, his son or the new iphone...

Different manufacturers do different things with Android. I think Samsung got it right with the S3. It works just great.

Does the maths really add up that way?

    £500 over 24 months is 20.83 per month, so you're looking at £30.83-£35.83 for a sim-only contract...

When I got the latest iphone, it was £79 + £34/month = £37.29 / month. I also got £130 cashback, which you don't often see on sim-only deals, so £5.42/month = 31.87 and being on a more expensive tariff, I get more minutes/text/internet than the sim only option. Then, depending on the provider, you can reduce your tariff after the halfway point, saving a few more quid - and you can earn (a little) interest on the portion of the £500 that stays in the bank.

Things may have changed, but it certainly never seemed that cut and dry to me...

You have to be joking. Microsoft have maintained no compatibility from one version of their mobile operating system to the next. This was true from Windows Mobile 6 to Windows Phone 7, and from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8. This is an unreasonable way for Microsoft to treat its users. On the other hand, Apple provides upgrades to an already decent operating system for many years after each product's launch. With the iPhone you can back up your phone and then restore the backup to a new product. With Microsoft, you lose all your data every time.

Windows Phone 8 onwards sees this end, M/S admit such as w8/WP8 was in development whilst W7/WP7 were in development. As for losing your data each time, no you back up to PC then manually select which files to sync to a new device.

Automation on a i-phone has its drawbacks moving from say a 32/64GB to a 16/8GB model replacement or 3/4/5 upgrade with lest space where itunes cannot pull the backup to the new device.

M/S WP8 onwards will kick Apple & Android bum, its converged all M/S platforms, WP,Windows & Xbox. WP development manager even responds to personal email from customers, do Android or iOS do that ? thought not ;)
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • Also don't iphones lock to the first SIM you put in them anyway? Does that apply to the bought outright ones too?

having said that idiophreak - did you get your phone at launch? I'm expecting to have to pay £99 for the phone and maybe £40 a month for the contract, at least. I'm wanting to get one within the first couple of weeks it's out. (giving it a week first to see if there are any really glaring iphone 4 style problems...)
