Facetime over 3G has been muted as well.

So you can see, but not hear, people? :p
  • I'm looking forward to a slightly larger screen but without making the phone body unreasonably wide as seems to be the trend right now. I'm also looking forward to the rumoured metal back and LTE. Otherwise, just more of the same would be great, the 4S is already a killer smartphone it would be foolish of Apple to steer too far away from such a winning combination.

Whole thing feels like evolution rather than evolution to me. I'm completely with this guy:

I've loved using my iPhone4, but won't commit another 2 years to the same phone, even with a slightly bigger screen. I'm afraid my next phone may well be android...

That was for a design fault apple made. They initially asked user to hold it in a different way but decided later that giving out a free case will possibly keep their fan base going.

I know why they did it, I was simply replying to the comment that Apple NEVER give anything for free.

This is a software enhancement in iOS6 rather than a hardware feature of the iPhone 5; the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 will also benefit from this. However, I understand that Apple may allow carriers to restrict this in the same way they already restrict tethering (Personal Hotspot). The latter is the only thing I don't like about the iOS. If I can put my SIM card in a non-Apple phone and use tethering, then why can't I do the same with my iPhone?

Id say go for it. If you're anything like me you'll probably find you want to move back, or try something else again, after a few months. You'll probably always have your favourite though, and you might not realise what that is until you're without it/try something different.
  • I'm ready for an upgrade, I've had my iPhone 4 for 2+ years now.

To take the plunge though I need a bigger screen with similar resolution, new processor/more memory, and better battery.

If it comes with 4G it will certainly need a better battery and this is the big selling point for me. If it doesn't have a 4G I'll keep hold of my iPhone 4, I'm not upgrading again in 12 months!
  • I phone 5 will feature a new dock connector. Its not USB.

Effectively everybody's docks, hi-fi's, car adaptors and cables are now made obsolete at the snap of a finger. So now you need to buy these all over again.

I'm not an apple fanboy but will almost certainly be getting the new iphone 5 pretty soon after release, even though I don't know the spec.
Why? Cos my iphone 3GS is starting to slow down (after 3 years) and so I'd like a new phone; I like the iphone and have spent money on apps I use every day which have tons of data in. Having used the same phone for 3 years I'm happy to commit to another phone for at least 2 years and happy with the iphone build quality.
So I'm assuming an incremental increase from the 4S in almost all spec, and that's enough for me. Obviously if they removed some key feature like a camera it'd be a deal breaker!
I will admit that the idea of a new dock is a bit of a pain but the only accessories I have for my iphone are chargers. (I have a card reader too but I can still use that with my ipad no problems). It'll just be a slight pain when me & DH go away for the weekend that we'll have to pack 2 charging cables not 1. But since the mains plug is interchangeable it isn't a big problem.

I have considered getting an android but it's the thought of having to pay again for all the (non free) apps I use regularly ...

Anyone who got a 4 or 4S within the first few weeks after the announcement day with O2 - what is the procedure for getting one once all the info is released? (I don't want to queue outside a shop...) Do I just call and say I want one and go on a waiting list? I'm on a simplicity tariff at the moment (which the guy on the phone termed the "waiting for iphone 5 tariff"...)

Strong rumours are that the screen will be taller than the current 960 pixels but retain the existing width of 640 pixels. As well as being 16:9 in landscape for playing videos etc, the screen will in portrait allow an extra row of apps.
