I have had a 4 since July 2010. When my colleague got a 4S last year we compared:

    • No discernible speed difference doing normal stuff. we both ran the same processor intensive game and it appeared exactly the same.
    • The 8MP camera is better on the 4S, but the 5MP on the 4 is no slouch.
    • Exactly the same design and retina display.
    • Siri is available on the 4S but is a joke and no-one I know with a 4S thinks it is any good or uses it.

Basically I think whether upgrading from a 4 or 4S it is still a comparable jump (i.e not a very big one).

Like you I am feeling underwhelmed by the launch and now have no intention of upgrading as I still like my 4, it was way ahead of the competition 2 years ago, and does everything I need, so I will be keeping it on a £9 /month Virgin rolling contract until something worthwhile comes out.

Basically, if you haven't had an iPhone before and want one now, then you may as well get the 5 if the price premium over the 4S isn't too great, but think of it as a 4S+,

If you have a 3GS then maybe worth it too. But otherwise I would wait it out and/or consider alternatives.

The only positive thing I have taken from the launch is there are a couple of features in IOS6 which look interesting, but everyone from 3GS on will be getting that anyway, so even less of an incentive!

    way ahead with what features?

For me, the selling points were the retina display which eclipsed everything else around at the time, the overall build quality of stainless steel & scratchprpof glass front and rear gives a really well built feel and means that when polished up now it still looks exactly like the day I bought it. The wife has an S2 which is a great phone but nowhere near as well made. It integrates with iTunes (which I still despise) but it means I could use the remote app to throw music to all the speakers around the house for a fraction of the price of a sonos or equivalent setup, plus it fitted the dock in the car for hands free & music from the dash controls. Oh, and cyclemeter, the killer app I use almost every day which no-one has managed to better IMHO. And it holds it's residual value well when I come to sell it.... And I got £125 cashback when I bought it.

Obviously each has their own needs, the iPhone4 just happened to meet mine. :)
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.
  • Hii Kate Long! I just want to say about iPhone 5 expectation that it should have a larger display screen, long life battery, faster data speed, amazing wireless technology along with unlimited apps.
  • I just want to say, got one, first iphone I have ever owned..... think its great!

Based on my experiences, and only my opinion, but, it was way ahead of most phones in terms of display quality, build and (most importantly) slickness of interface.

For the couple of handsets that came close to matching those, the iPhone 4 was way ahead in terms of battery life.

The specs on paper may not have been devastating, but the overall product was the best around by some margin.

all but the slickness of interface I would expect
its more expensive, and thats not what I would call way ahead on features

Sorry, I just really don't understand what you mean?
  • ive had my iphone 5 for 2 weeks after upgrading from an iphone 4...and im selling it tomorrow.

its a good phone, but ive had an iphone for 4 years now and the iphone 5 just doesnt feel like a new phone. itd be great if youve never had an iPhone or upgrading from a 3g but otherwise its not very exciting and has stayed in the same predictable and safe format theyve always used.

im selling it at CEX for £613 and then buying a Sony Xperia T, i'll then have £200 back and stay on my iphone tariff but with data plan changed so its compatible.

im glad ive broken the iPhone cycle as i couldn't put up with the 5 for 2 more years then when the 6 comes out it'll be the same phone, same icons etc.

I think anyones best plan is to see what the phone offers, see if it meets your requirements & then make a decision, rather than comparing a 4 to a 5. The 5 will naturally be quicker & the like, but is the outlay worth it is the question.

I would ideally like to shift to Android & specifically a Samsung Galaxy S3 (i'm currently on an iPhone 3GS since 2010).

No phone ticks ALL my boxes, but the closest is still the iPhone unfortunately. I'll be shifting to an iPhone 4S i think, as i would really like a better camera & certainly one with a flash/light, plus my iPhone 3GS has been lagging so bad since i installed iOS5.

I play a lot of games on mine, on my work breaks & such & the Android scene just doesn't cut it for me, which is enough for me to have to say no to it.
