  • I muself have also had one of these blue congratulation slips through and also won a gold membership to a local ladies health club. After phoning the local health club which i would like to add is the only ladies one in this city and has a reputation for being extremely good. I learning what was include which is the full membership which includes unlimited access, all classes which can be very pricey, personal programme, nutrition program thing etc the only classes i don't get are the pole dancing (such a shame) yoga and ballet which you would have to pay for on the full membership anyway so basically the full membership. Only not for a year as i would have thought but this would be for 3 years which works out to 1620 at 45 a month which is what they charge, so going by the 3.81 which works out to 15.24 per month instead of the 45 which overall for 3 years all inclusive membership is 548.64, thats quite a saving and very tempting.
  • Hello all, what a great site I wish I knew about it sooner! Apparently all my colleagues in work have been logging on for ages.
Anyway, I recieved the same thing in the post yesterday morning, I took one look at it and laughed, as it was my day off I thought I would give them a call (I was very Bored at the time). It was for a gym in Gloucester about 2 miles from my house. Anyway, they have told me that my gift expires this monday. I am going to go in and see what they have to say. My wife thinks I am mad and that I should get a hobby rather than go snopping round gyms!
I will let you know what happens........

I received on of these Mr/Mrs letters today informing me I'd won one of 32 prizes donated by local businesses.

I thought I'd google it first, then after finding this thread confirming my suspicions, I shredded it.
  • Received the same letter today and thankfully googled it and found this site. Thanks for the heads up.
  • Just received one of these today, so thanks to this site I know now to put it in the bucket. One thing though, I subcribe to the Mailing Preference Service, so should they be sending me this junk mail in the first place?

  • My mother just received one of these. Binned it without asking her permission. Don't think she'd be interested in the gym 'prize', she's 95!!

Hi, this is my first time post. I received the same thing yesterday: Mr/Mrs in the post with a red Royal Mail inked stamp on it, with compliments Survey UK; Congratulatory blue slip exp. date 29 July. etc. I won't go on because you all seem to know what the paper looks like by now.

I rang them up and it is a normal telephone rate. The free `Gold' membership worth £750 was mentioned as well as `all inclusive' use of classes and equipment minus a £3.81 weekly fee for maintenance, and of course the offer was very time limited.

But (and there's always a but).

There is no substitute prize if you're not a gym goer. I found out when I was asked to hold so the girl could find out which `prize' I had won. This is to make you think there is more than one prize when that's it, really.

Then my friend heard from a neighbour that they charge £40 for the call - which isn't possible on a normal call rate...is it? The call took no more than 5 minutes. However, her warning led me here, so I dug a bit deeper and this is what else I found:

The gym (The Studio, in Bath) lists a full membership - nowhere does it say `Gold Membership.' Cost is £45/mo = £540/yr. If you minus the £3.81/wk fee technically you'd save £341.88... not bad, BUT, I was told the prize included yoga and dance classes and the website says membership does not include it. Also, £540 is so clearly not the £750 worth mentioned. And when I asked for clarification on the maintenence fee, the woman at the gym claimed she didn't know, because she didn't deal with `those things.' The poor woman was obviously tired of fielding enquiries about the matter!
  • hi i also recieved one this morning thought it was a bit strange that there was not name so found this website and am now glad i did it has gone in the bin

They are still going - though mine wasn't *** membership (sorry can't bring myself to use the word.....) - it was a fitness club. Told the girl it had no value for me and she politely said goodbye and hung up. At least no pressure selling.

I got one of these yesterday from Matters Consulting Ltd t/a Survey UK. Same old thing expires in a weeks time, maximum of 50 gifts available. Total value of gifts exceed £32,500
    Woohoo!

I was bored and have spare time at the mo so did some digging. Victoria House is certainly a busy place for fitness advertising companies.

The first mention of all of this I can find is a reference on greenspun.com in Oct 01 relating to LMD Ltd sending out the same old bits of paper. LMD Ltd are said to be connected to Opinions Ltd but I can't find anything that ties them to Victoria House.

    But theres more...

In 1997 dutch marketer Alphons Petrus Smit set up AMC Fitness Ltd with italian fitness club manager Donana Smit. The company is registered as an advertising company, based at Victoria House and 'care of Hazlewoods' (more on this later). On the same day Mr Smit also set up Fitness Sales Ltd with british fitness centre owner Martin Flett; again an advertising company based at Victoria House. Both also are connected with 37 St Georges Road.

Fitness Sales Ltd was dissolved in 2006 but AMC Fitness Ltd is still active.

Next, in 1998 Carmen Kroll and italian Phillip James Kroll set up Winfield Marketing which is quickly renamed to Opinions Ltd (said to be trading as Survey UK). Based at the now familiar Victoria House this is the company that was said to be linked to LMD Ltd in 2001. In 2002 the Advertising Standards Authority ruled against Opinons Ltd (see link below). The company is still active.

Finally, in 2006 british marketing man Peter Farnell and Amanda Phillips set up the advertising company Matters Consulting Ltd which also trades as Survey UK. They are of course based in Victoria House. Interestingly, the contact on their company return is Hazlewoods LLP of Cheltenham (Mr Smit's original company from 1997 was also 'c/o Hazlewoods') who are probably their accountants. Amusingly if you look on the back on the 'Congratulations' leaflet it says (c) 2004 Matters Consulting; 2 years before the company was formed.

So, theres a bit of a tangle of companys there for some reason. Personally I'll be sending my gift offer back to Mr Farnell though I'm not sure if I have a stamp handy.
