I think it's madness that someone would prefer to buy a brand new 1.4 corsa than 5 year old BMW. 5 year BMW all the way.
Couldn't agree more! I got my mum an 07 Panda diesel a few months ago and when I told my friends how much it was they asked if she had just said to me 'go and get me a really crap car that's expensive!' Ok it does 70mpg+ which is what she wants but to me its a silly little noddy car!

    Even if it's a 1 series?
  • BMW has issued a fix, I should imagine the fix should be free.

they havent rolled out the fix for the 3 series keyless only X series.

and as it isn BMW specific fault, its not a recall so no its a pay for it ECU update!.

Oh indeed. I'd be a big advocate of buying older BMW's, over new(er) euroboxes.

I only agree if you afford to repair/replace/maintain the BMW without posting threads such as "20 inch tyres for my BMW are £300 each!!!!!!!! Shall I fit £80 Linglong Ditchfinders????"

I was reading what car magazine, The owners survey. Linked to some warranty company.

One BMW owner put in a warranty claim for over £10,000.

The more complex ones, yes, i can imagine. From memory in the 7 series theres no mechanical link from the 'gear selector' to the gearbox, so its all electronic. Imagine that if something goes wrong.

The problem is, people buy a used 7 series / 5 series / x5 that cost maybe £60K new, for maybe £5K but dont realise it still has the running costs of something thats maybe £70K car new.

Personally, and at the moment, i like big simple straight 6 manual 3 series - i've had a couple of 330Ci's this year although i've just bought a cheap-as-chips 318Ci. Not sure i would have the balls to buy an old 7 series or a 540i though. :(

I've been lucky with S Types recently too, run them for a short time then sold them on for profit and no issues so far

I think that is not a one off event, a swirl flap ingestion even on an old model (2004 5 Series diesel) will put you back well over £8k. Newer models, much more.

I've read on another forum a misfuel led to the fuel pump breaking down littering the engine with fuel pump parts (filter on the other side), that was over £7k.

When I was looking at the 320D, for me, spending this much on a car, the iDrive/Satnav was a must. As soon as I opened the page if I didn't see the iDrive screen I closed the page. There is FAR too many standard SE trim variants to chose.
At that price it has to be top spec.

I ended up going for an older 5 Series (530D) and set about a swirl flap removal within a few weeks of ownership even though it was in Warranty.

I thought other BMW driver might treat me differently now I have one, Nope! still cut me up, drive inches from my rear and try to race me (even the 318D's seem to want to prove a point).
