to sing or not to sing?

  • I had a partner that insisted I couldn't sing and should never raise my voice around anyone.

I sing regularly now. In public. With applause.

Ignore him undermining your confidence and get some experience/lessons behind you. Look for community singing groups - there are often some held in pubs on slow nights.

    And HAVE FUN!

  • I don't actually know what my natural voice is!

It's the one where you don't feel like it's a struggle to keep up! If you feel like you're out of control, it's probably the wrong key. Someone on here with training and experience will be able to properly describe it but for me, if I try and sing too high, it hurts my throat at the back of my soft palate. And I find my breathing is out of whack too.
  • Ooh, your second song was very good! And it was in a lower key than Starships and sounded nore natural. Lovely!

Thanks :) I am glad yo are singing as it sounds like your passion, to be honest it is more banter I think but I just don't really have much confidence so i prob take it to heart
  • I'd recommend Rock Choir (though it's not cheap) as it's great fun, no auditions but there is the opportunity to sing solos, etc. I can't sing particularly well though I can hold a tune but with the practice, use of backing tracks on my mp3, I don't sound too bad.

And we do some really great events such as the flash mob we did in March. We have a biggy coming up on Saturday but I don't know if I'm allowed to mention it.... (Will do afterwards)

  • I am looking into this, it looks great but I still don't know confidence wise if I could! I don't really have any hobbies or go to any clubs with the kids/work / study! I am going to try and be brave! It is one thing behind a computer another real life lol
  • You can do a free trial session to see if you like it. I go on my own but everyone is very friendly. Have a look on Youtube there are lots of examples of the stuff we do (some better than others!)

Well, to be absolutely honest, it was playing the music that got me into it. I started playing bass and one day I was rehearsing and muckng around singing and they decided I was doing backing as well. I was convinced they'd turn the mic off.

But they didn't. And they asked me back. And I joined another group where I began to fit in the lower range, which suited them as they had a vocal gap. Fast forward a bit and I'm technically a multi instrumentalist and singer. But I still half expect to be told to shut up because I sing like a bloke (tenor range).

    Go for it!

  • (haven't listened .. but ...)

As you can tell from my username - I sing!
On Tuesdays with a community choir. (And on other days!)

For years I thought I couldn't sing, as I can't sing high with most women.
But I've really found my voice with this singing group. I'm a female tenor! There are actually more women than men singing tenor in our group!

It's given me SO much confidence. Now if I have to sing, at a wedding or something, and it's rather high, I just drop down an octave when the others soar high. And I'm no longer self-conscious doing it. It's lovely to feel so comfortable singing!

So OP, yes definitely explore singing . You could have a few lessons to help you explore your voice and/or you could go along to whatever singing groups you can find in your area. Some have different degrees of singing for fun /singing for performance, so try out a few different ones if you have the choice. Ours is a VERY laid back group and we don't perform much as not many of us can get to every single practice.

    Have fun!

Sing! And own it! This is obviously a passion. :)

Join a choir if you wish to, they will teach you how to make the most of your voice.

ETA: I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but I sing for all I'm worth come Sunday service.
