Sports direct- daughter injured

The reason stores have 'stock rooms' is so that enough stock can be carried to satisfy demand - while making the shop floor SAFE for customers and staff.
We don't have stock rooms as such, we have a loading area which is constantly full of cages and items to be processed - which is why we always say when anyone asks "if it's not on the shop floor we don't have it". We have a shelf for bikes and a few bags of inflated footballs but apart from that everything is on the shop floor.
I can see why you would want to avoid the stores; of course, there are some compromises to be made when shopping; whether it be for the price, quality or shopping environment. For us, the first one is usually the best, the second one is fine as long as you avoid the really cheap stuff, and the third one is what we always strive to improve, but never have quite enough time...0 -
if you want to see a extremely bad example of store management and stock placement visit the ebbw vale shopping center sports direct.
i was there not long ago, and you couldnt navigate the shop it was so rammed packed with shelfs stands there were disabled people waiting outside the doors because the double doors were blocked with stands that reduced it to a single entry, i was side stepping around everything in the shop, because the stands and railes were literally about 7 inches appart from eachother, so you often bumped into people, and things were hanging from the ceiling in there, like a net of footballs, rugby balls and basket balls etc.0 -

sorry for the delay in replying csn - been away on holiday.
hun - Nothing is more important than customer and staff safety!
Yes, Price, Quality and shopping environment is important (I did say I had said foot in the store named.......but one minute had me turning around and going out again! Yeuuuch - I even saw fire doors with stock piled in front of them!
you may think it isnt important - but if a fire starts in store (it isnt impossible, it happened in one store I worked in) could you get out? considering that the customers will all rush to the front of the store?
I can only think that your store is allowed to get away with blatant disregard for health and safety regs (and bad staff training), is because no-one is reporting them and/or the dept of the council responsible is understaffed and overworked. Junior staff often assume that management have all the bases covered and the store is operating within all guidelines. It's nice that you have defended your workplace - but, dont forget it's YOUR safety which is at risk there too!0 -
while i can sympathise with you for having to calm an upset small child you really need to put this into perspective, its not like a bag (unless its filled with something heavy) will cause anything other than a little temporary discomfort...
I think most people are missing the point here.
Their shops are in general cluttered with very little room to move around - this problem is compounded when the shop is busy.
Many of their products are displayed at height and can only be accessed by stepladders or a pole with a hook on it - which is hardly ideal as the ladders also clutter up the shop.
The relatively minor injury is not the point - the OP's daughter could have been a baby and could have resulted in a more serious injury or the bag could have fallen on an elderly person that could have had more serious consequenses.
I would suggest the OP writes to their head office - (nearly 1,700 people reported health and safety incidents to them in 2010) to hopefully avoid a repeat of the incident - although I have to concede, they are an awful company and I suspect that a generic 'we take health and safety serious' reply would be the best she would get.The_Black_Sheep wrote: »And if my aunty had b*llocks she'd be my uncle.
What if it had fallen on a baby? What if it had been a frail elderly woman? What if it hadn't been a bag? And so on...
The issue is what did happen, not what could have happened.
It is ignorant comments like this from ignorant people who I have to attempt to educate on a regular basis.
It is by addressing the incidents where nobody has been seriously hurt that lessons can be learnt and corrective action taken to avoid a repetition where the outcome may be more serious.
Someone may slip on a dodgy floor in a commercial kitchen without any serious consequences - the next time somebody encounters the faulty floor, they try to stop their fall but flash fry their hand and arm in a deep fat fryer - it has happened!0 -
I am rarely allowed out shopping on my own but last xmas my wife insisted I go into town with her and the kids.
There was one shop (Hollisters?) where it was all pitch black and really dark. Everything was very narrow and designed for skinny people. Think they even had fake stairs put in at the front to deter OAPs from wandering in.
With all this clearly designed to deter me and the double buggy with two grumpy kids decided to taken on the Hollisters challenge. We had great fun, and managed two whole laps of the shop before being escorted out.
I havent tried sports direct but that is now on my list with the double buggy this xmas. Will the staff at sports direct be as young, skinny, and aloof as they are at hollister?0 -
Hi all... just a little update on this!
I wrote them a massive letter of complaint and was told they would investigate it.
I have now received the details of their investigation and I am absolutely disgusted!!!!!!
They have competely made up a witness, who apparently works at the store.
The letter states that
1) My daughter was NEVER hit by the bag, the witness saw it fall directly to the floor - Blatent LIE!!
2) The witness made sure the child was OK - Blatent LIE!!
3) The witness claims that he spoke to my child and that she wasn't crying and made no complaint of being injured. - Blatent LIE!!
When the incident happened there was not a single member of staff in sight, which is why I had to go the tills to make a complaint. No-one asked my daughter if she was OK, they weren't interested.
What should I do now? I only ever expected to receive a half a**d apology and now it's made me even more angry, the fact that they've lied about the whole thing. Why not just say 'OK we messed up, we're sorry' ???
Should they still have the CCTV footage? or will it have been conveniently deleted due to how long ago it was?
Thanks all.0 -
Come on, did you honestly expect anywhere near the truth from this mob? It would cost them MONEY that's something Ashley will never do, he's only interested in making it, not losing it, chalk this one up, be happy your child wasn't seriously hurt & never go back into one of his dumps again.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

It would cost their insurance money not them.
Either way its a poor reply by Sports Direct, I very much doubt they would have the CCTV, normally they are only kept for 28 days max in retail.
As above, I would chalk it down as a bad experience and be happy you have posted it here where potentially 10 million people will see it.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Sports direct shops are one of these worst shops I have ever seen, they rival primark and txmaxx for looking like a jumble sale difference is that you can actually navigate a pram or a wheelchair around txmaxx or primark.
I have actually before now gone into my local SD and physically had to move rails out of the way to be able to get thru with a pram whilst the staff looked on never once was I asked what I was doing and the rail was still in the same position the next week, they couldnt be bothered to move it back.
I did speak to one of the managers in there and complained about the store lay out and he couldnt form a proper answer, The shop is a dump !
Ive never been back in since that day, I go to a small family run sports shop round the corner who have a clean, well laid out store and nice staff I would much rather pay the extra few quid and have a comfy shopping experience !0 -

Their insurance would then rise - which SD will avoid at any and all costs.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
