I am not convinced life was any easier in previous times - it just had different pressures. Nor is reality tv etc really anything new - it's just the latest evolution of what was happening when whichever-Roman-it-was said "Times are bad. Children no longer obey their parents, and everyone is writing a book". At least kids now are fat instead of dying from infectious diseases and women juggle their responsibilities and OPTIONS instead of er, not having a vote, dying in childbirth or being allowed their own bank account. I think you'd only have to go back 2/3 generations in your family tree to find women who would be delighted to swop with you. And you have free choice about whether to engage in FB, Twitter, utterly rubbish tv, nonsensical fashion stereotypes etc so if you don't like it, switch it off. People have always been on show to the rest of their community and one of the benefits of the internet etc is that you can now choose your own community instead of being stuck with your geographic neighbours.
I think we (middle class first worlders) perhaps have more difficulty in defining the things we should take responsibility for and those that are beyond our control, simply because we have an amazing level of choice. And that can lead to confusion and anxiety. But I don't think that's a reason to wish it away - it's a reason to think really carefully about what we want and what we believe in.

I don't deny life in the past was harder, that was not remotely my point. I am in an incrediably priviledged position and so are the kids I teach for the most part, it was just an observation about the women I am friends with. Having someone on outside say something I have heard a hundred times from them and so had accepted as normal. It was interesting to see and hear from a different perspective.
Slightly off my point but hey, I do think kids are exposed to many influences out of the control of their parents and this makes it hard for there to be a consensus on right and wrong.Nevertheless she persisted.0 -
I seem to have spent most of my holiday watching tv which if not free is at least paid for out of my rent.
Just wanted to say the epsiode of "Bones" called The Maggots in the Meathead is very good. bit gross, but entertaining.

I have been writing and rewriting attempts at tact so I'm going to give up and just say - perhaps you need some more friends with different perspectives. Sorry
but that really doesn't have to be the norm.
Your new bloke sounds fabulous and I hope you're going to keep him

I could not sleep last night!
it iwas almost three before I dropped off and ok I did sleep till 8.30-9 and dozed mostly through the Andrew Marr show but I feel like a complete zombie.
I was worried about the state of the house and wondering how to solve the problem of a deposit. Oh and feeling fat (timing of suss weight loss advert reminded me of the what to wear to the wedding I am going to in March phase of not sleeping)
So yeah. zombie buffy is going to clean her room and take down the Christmas tree(sob).
!!!!!! I need to get in to the shed. Guess I ought to get dressed then!Nevertheless she persisted.0 -
Just grabbing a cushion so I can pop back and catch up later x put the kettle on lass! But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.0

I went into the shed, discovered a number of things I had "saved" for the house have got mould on them! so they went into the bin.
There are a number things I can sell, part of me wants to bin or freecycle BUT that is me being lazy. Even if I got a tenner for each thing it would be about 100 quid.
There are things I will Freecycle tho, furniture for a start and "useful things"
anyhow now I am off to the loft again.

SO the loft is a project.
a HUGE project.
Now it occured to me in a sneaky sneaky Mc sneaky way that Mum probably won't be dancing up the loft ladder anytime soon. I feel awful saying this but she simply will NOT sort anything out re clutter, it doesn't bother her. It is like a giant security blanket for her. well ok, less so now especially when I pointed out it had all been up there for ten years so we did get rid of stuff. It was accompanied with lots of Why did we keep that??
Thing is I can see how the stuff in the loft is damaging the ceiling in a couple of rooms, cracks etc. and honestly I HATE DISORGANISATION. For me it is a sign of depression and me giving up. Plus I want to know what rubbish up there is mine.
So yeah, whilst Mum is away I shall be up there binning stuff left right and centre. And seeing what I can e bay or sell locally.
Tomorrow we have a tip and cardboard run - we have that much rubbish we are taking both cars!!!
Overall I guess the loft looks better - well it is better in that I have a clue about what is up there and it is a little move organised. I am just always annoyed by an unfinished job.
Promised Mum we 'd watch "The Iron Lady" at nine, so had best get a shift on with the last lot of rubbish...................*yawns*Nevertheless she persisted.0 -

Tonight he said in the spirit of honesty (I guess) that he thought I didn't look after myself properly, I don't eat right and seem generally not healthy.
To have a virtual stranger (I mean he isnt but he has only been around a few months) tell you this and make observations about your life - not unkindly just questioning what he sees.........well it made me wonder. my lifestyle is kinda crap. I don't eat properly or reguarly, I can't seem to eat full dinners with out feeling ill and will happily just eat chocolate to survive a rough day.
any how I know all this, knew before he came along. Just interesting to see it is "true" if you see what I mean.
Interesting. I know he means well but I think I'd be kind of annoyed with him. I wouldn't want somebody observing my eating habits and commenting, it would make me feel kind of uncomfortable around them as I'd feel I had to watch what I was eating all the time for fear of more negative comments. I also don't think changing your eating habits to keep him happy would be a good idea. The only reason to change your eating habits/lifestyle is if you want to do it, for yourself. Yeah , I know what you mean but I don't know with him....... There are loads of people who could say that sort of thing to me and I would feel as you say, but he didn't. He wasn't being negative as such and remember I was ill whilst we were away.
To be honest it has been so long since someone wanted to look after me that I am just kinda going with it.Nevertheless she persisted.0
