Maria - a HUGE thanks from me.
b_e_g - I second the fact that grandads and nanas are the most wonderful people - I couldn't do what I do without the help of my dad (and my mum when she was alive).
MrsBaggins - my mum had a magnifying glass that she used to put round her neck and the legs sort of sat on her chest, she thought it was wonderful. It was similar to this one - except this one says it has a light. http://www.amazon.co.uk/In-Illuminated-Hands-free-Magnifier-led/dp/B004FR6XDC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1348652906&sr=8-2Cross Stitch Cafe Member #59 :j

Thanks for clearing up the rules Caroline
I realised i didn't have any fabric so i'm treating myself to some Iridescent aida and buying a proper aperture card. If anyone else needs fabric and cards for the exchange i found cross stitch heaven to be very reasonable for both. The 5"x7" aida is 40p and the card is 53p, postage is only £1 too  The design i'm doing is very non-traditional, i hope the recipient will like itCross Stitch Cafe Member No1WIP: Cross Stitch: - Crochet:0 -

I find that I have trouble seeing the holes in the fabric!! I tend to do stuff like that in bed as I am nice and cosy so need some kind of magnifier i think. does anyone use one? things to look out for? the hobby specific ones seem quite pricey but have seen them about for around £20. ant input on helping me to see better would be great!
Hi Mrs Baggins. I am actually an optician so here is my advice: you need to go see your optician. Your lens prescription may need changing slightly to give you more range, a cheap pair of reading glasses to wear over your cls may help (even if you don't need 'reading glasses' as such. Also ensure the lighting is good. Basically- you need to have a chat about your options and do tell them exactly what you need them for, what distance you work at etc.
I wear cls too and actually have some glasses escpecially for sewing even though I don't need reading glasses, they have no prescription at the top, and a little bit of prescription at the bottom so I can look up to see TV and look down to see sewing with slight magnification. However, when not wearing cls I am ok with my normal glasses.
Basically it's all fairly specific to you, and your prescription so you are probably best speaking to your optician as buying a magnifier may not actually solve your problem.

Thanks for this information. Did you manage to get a small piece of iridescent aida? The only one I can find is 5 pieces for £10. Think it would be nice if I stitched my cousins fairy/ies (thanks Maria) on iridescent fabric.Cross Stitch Cafe Member #59 :j

Best to check nothing can be done there efore investing in a magnifier you don't need... of course... a magnifier may be one of the options

I am in such a massive quandry as to what to do for christmas card exchange! I'm changed my mind three times, had a go at charting my own design, changed my mind again and still not sure! Don't want to do something too time consuming as must get on with birth sampler for friend for christmas
but equally, don't want to do something too easy so it looks like I haven't put any effort in
Oh decisions, decisions, decisions!
