so do we have any knitters amongst us? I have seen some wool I like and will get the needles I need - I want to stitch a chunky warm scarf using only knit/purl or simply knit. I am simply not confident enough to do anything fancy i..e increase, decrease etc.

So do I have to use the needles the wool specifies or can I use a much larger needle i.e. a 15 or 20mm needle to stitch my scarf or will it simply be a disaster?
  • You should use the size it suggest, because it will just look a bit holey if you use massive ones.

I wondered that. I picked some really bright yellow wool but actually its smaller than I was expecting (the wool is quite thin) - I suspect I will need to use the 4mm needles it suggests rather than the 20mm !!! :rotfl: May be I will knit my teddy bear a scarf !

How many stitches for the average scarf do you think I need to cast on?

ps did you get caught up in bus chaos today ?

If you regularly buy Cross Stitch Magazines, would you be interested if sew and so did projects packs? I.e. supplied all materials, thread, needle, material for whichever project you have seen in the mag that you want to stitch? Just something that has occured to me.

Cross Stitch Collection want £33.50 for the Noel project pack

it usually says on the ball band what needle size you need, you could use a different needle BUT that would give you a looser scarf that would be more floppy than it is meant to be if that makes sense,
you could use two different sized needles that would give you a cobwebby finish as one row would be the right tension and the alternate ones looser.
if you get stuck pm me for my addy post me the wool and ill send you the scarf back once its knitted.;)

started a scrappy scarf last night using up lots of dirrerent odments from my wool bag, size 8 needles cast on 250 stitches leaving a 9in end each end knit every row leaving tails where you cast on and off and when youre happy its wide enough cast off, tadadah you have a stripy scarf with a fringe each end:rotfl: well thats the hope anyway

im not doing stitchy stuff tonight im stuffing 25 little snow men and embroidering their faces on, they just need scarves adding then they'll be tree decorations to sell at DS2 school craft fayre

if you want it thicker but like the colour knit it up two balls at a time, if it comes up the same thickness as double knit youd need about a size 8 old size needle.

how many stitches you cast on depends on how wide you want your scarf

Try two balls together.. or use the needles it says and cast on more that you thought... 30-40 maybe? Try a bit and see if you like it, it's the only way to know.

I'm a Citybus girl, so it didn't bother me, although they were all really busy. I don't think we get any First buses at all near me.

I am so tired, didn't sleep last night, so think I might go to bed x

I finally got around to sorting out some frames to reduce the amount in the "finished but not yet got around to framing pile". First one is a Poppy Flower Fairy, it's embellished rather than fully cross stitch. I gave it to a friend I met at lunch, she has a daughter called Poppy.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... it's really chilly out there tonight. Visited Mum then s-i-l and had to de-ice the car twice. Have had several flurries but hasn't really come to much - yet .

Finished the metallic thread stitching on 12/12/12 tonight which I really hated doing but it's done now so thats all good.

Good luck for tomorrow sweetcarer and take care on the roads.

Poppy Flower Fairy is really beautiful JSC1.

Hope you've just been too busy Louise to post and that everything is ok with you.

As the clocks to back this weekend - will that mean more stitchy time for us????? :D

    Take care everyone
