  • Have never heard of this shop but would love to look it up if I am ever in Blackpool again - I love old fashioned shops and buttons

Shop sounds fab... While on subject of buttons, does anyone know a good i.e cheap place to purchase buttons that I can embroider myself. I really dislike the ones that came on my joe brown coat so want to replace them with custom purple and black embroidered ones. They will need to be at least an inch in diameter.

    cheers
  • I agree with FE's comment that cheapest is not always best as quality matters and I would always go for a brand such as Zweigart for larger pieces.

Sewandso's prices are good and the quality and service are excellent. Willow Fabrics have some great offers on clearance fabrics (which are all Zweigart) and a great range of fabrics. Of course the most popular colours aren't in the clearance range.
Heritage Crafts have an EB shop where they sell and auction fabrics at good prices so worth checking if they have anything you like.
For the fans of sparkly aida on here Heritage currently have FQs of iridescent 14 count aida in green, pink and lemon at £5.50 plus 75p postage and white sparkly 16 count at £5.49 plus £1. Their service is excellent and they will combine postage if you buy more than one item. The fabric is what they use in their kits and is Zweigart.

    also check out:
    celtic rose needlecraft
tandem cottage -also see on ebay
    and
sparklies (currently in love with the colours and they have grab bags and clearance and yards and clubs and good prices and p+p

I have the pako needle threader. I have rarely used it but thats not because I'm not a fan - more because I haven't had the need - have been concentrating more on smaller projects.

    This is me too ;0)

    Hi everyone!
Sorry it's been a while since I last posted. It's been a busy few days.

    Hi Ladies.

Ruth. Hope everything went ok at the docs. When I had keyhole surgery my belly button went icky but sorted itself out in the end. My doc said because of where it's located on your body it's not naturally able to get fresh air to it so takes longer to heal.

The practise nurse seemed more interested in taking my blood pressure 3 times-IN EACH ARM!-than looking at the surgery wounds. She said they looked ok, but by Thursday night I was getting concerned. The belly button one was hurting when I was stood up and didn't look very nice. As I was out all day on Friday and over the weekend the Drs is closed, my hubby called the hospital and asked their advice. They told us to come to A&E on Saturday and they'd get a member of the surgical team to come and look at it. Long story short, we got majorly messed about by the hospital when we went, but they decided it wasn't infected. Just taking longer to heal than expected. Was prescribed some cream and told to keep it covered. When I changed the dressing yesterday, it was looking better already.

Wish I wasn't so far away, I would of took a days leave to go with you - I know I didn't know the lady but don't like the idea of you going on your own esp with you just out of hospital.

That's so lovely of you to say. Shame you're the opposite end of the country to me! :)
I managed the day ok. It was a long train journey, then I took a taxi to the crematorium. The family made me feel very welcome, even though I'd never met them before. I was recognised from photos, though, which was nice. I was walked back to the train station and given some sarnies to have on the train! LOL! Finally got home at 10:30pm. Loooong day!

Thanks to everybody who was thinking of me that day. It means a lot. :)

:( Need to phone a couple of companies today and I really don't want to! :(

Hate phoning strangers but needs must - one of them is my online savings acc, haven't been able to access my Xmas savings for days and I'm starting to worry :o

I'm like that with phoning companies too. I hate doing it and will get DH to call if I can.

Just been into my local newsagent to secure my copy of Cross Stitch Collection - due in the shops on Friday.

He said it wasn't a popular seller and I said that was probably because it was expensive and there was no free gift. I mentioned that Cross Stitch Crazy next month includes a free Margaret Sherry kit and I thought would sell well. The blank look I received back was priceless!

Has anyone bought fabric from AT? was it ok?
    shelly wrote: »

So now I need to know if DMC fabric is as good as their thread?!? Anyone use it?

I usually buy fabric from Sewandso or AT and (if I'm desperate) Hobbycraft

DMC fabric is fine, anything which is a named brand is usually okay.

The ONLY time I have ever had bad fabric was an ebay purchase where the white fabric looked a bit grey and if you looked at it it was warped so the lines were squint

So I only buy from bigger companies now, even if it costs a little extra. So it's sewandso for large pieces and AT for small.

    Ailsb this is beautiful!
According to an item I heard on the radio yesterday those annoying tunes that repeat in your head are called "ear worms" :D

Yes ear worms! My dad told me that the german word for 'a song that is stuck in your head' literally translates as 'ear worm'. It kinda cool that they have a word for that :)

    Thanks

I've not used DMC fabric I'm afraid, I usually use Zweigart that I get from either Sew & So or Willow fabrics.

Keiss - Good to see you popping back in!

Ruth_honey - Glad it went as well as expected last week and that you're feeling better.

I used to be the same about phoning people I don't know, I refused and would always get my mum to call for me but I seem to have got over it :rotfl:. Perhaps cause I've had to do it for work.

Interesting to read about the needle organisers, has never heard of them! I usually park my threads, but might give one a go if I can get it cheap :money:

Have been working slowly away on my Angel, will post a pic tomorrow as I'm off out for dinner tonight with my bridesmaids to talk weddings!

sk00bie1-Your kitty stocking hanger is lovely. Is it a Mill Hill design?
Blackwork angel is gorgeous too. Amazing how striking just 2 colours can look.

Mags_cat-My mum was working at Cheltenham racecourse last Friday. She was in the new Festival coffee/sandwich bar.
If I've not already said, I love the owl stitched in browns. If I find my chart again, I might try stitching in variegated browns. Looks great!

Laura-Gel superglue is now on my list of things to buy. Did you say you bought it in Wilkinsons?

subtle_minx-I used some glow in the dark thread YEARS ago on a halloween design. At the time I was working in a wool shop and the owner ordered them from their suppliers, so unsure where stocks them. Darn it! I can't find them! Why can I never put anything away again??? I'm pretty sure they were Krenick.
Quick google...I think it was these. http://www.sewandso.co.uk/ran507-0.html (about 1/3 way down the page). You can blend them, or use several strands to have purely glow in the dark. I don't remember them being any more trouble than metallics. Just had a vague memory of DMC doing a glow in the dark thread too, although I think it was only one colour. Probably cheaper, though. Ah, just read the next message and saw that JSC1 has some DMC, so I did remember correctly.

Flat Eric-Hope you're not feeling so grumpy by now. Hate when you get days like that for no reason. ETA: I follow FGW on Twitter and saw the news about someone getting hit by a train. So sad.
That Boofle kit is very cute. Especially like the little robin. :)

littlestar1981-I'm guessing by your name that you were born in 1981, so that makes you a year younger than me. I think I bought my Calendar Bears kit when I was about 18 (so 1998) and I've still not finished it! My favourite bear is OctoBEAR. Always makes me smile.

Sweetcarer-I know it's late, but I really love both of the bookmarks. The different stitches one is interesting & colourful, but the blue one is fun and would make people laugh.

Blimey! How did it get so late? I haven't had lunch yet and I've got a friend coming over a bit later. Better grab a bite to eat and get organised. I'll pop back for the rest of my catch up later.
