Realistically that's about half the private sector rate so your mum's giving you quite a leg up!Well the reason for me asking is that my mum is making me pay £400 per month and compared to what all my friends pay at their parents house it seemed a bit steep especially when she knows the whole reasom ive come back is to save for a purpose! I just wanted to find out what other people thought as she is adamant im gettig a good deal?!!0 -

the going rate for a small room is £3k a month(there's 4 in the house)? really ?0 -

Exactly. Another option is to force you to save, say 60% of matket rent each month, and give them the other 40%; then you're helping out whilst saving for your future mortgage deposit. That is not meant for travelling.

I don't know what you earn but the norm is 1/3 board, 1/3 to spend and 1/3 to save.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

All depends on how much you earn, how much your parents earn, their views and values etc.
The whole point of moving home is to save money.
Tough parents
Mine wouldn't charge me apart from help with food bill I would guess0 -
I live in Gravesend, Kent.,. just a single room here would cost upwards of £69 a week.., and u'd still have to pay for food (this would normally include bills). Obviously u r living in London, not Kent, so I'd expect to pay more.
I realise you feel a bit offended that your parents are asking for £400 a month but u also have to take into account that u being there DOES cost them more in food, heating, hot water etc. And they have lost the privacy etc they had regained when u left home. It doesn't mean they don't care, believe u me, its not a market rate u r paying. U want to travel.., but its going to involve sacrifices.., which is a useful thing. Why should your parents fund your travel plans? I'm sure if u were saving to buy a flat, they'd reduce what they wanted accordingly, but I don't really see why they should give u a cheap rate room so u can travel????
You may have friends paying less.., I remember my step brother was paying a fiver a week for his room when I was paying £12 to my parents lol. Its just the way things go. Some parents find lesser amounts acceptable than others.
It might be a good idea to discuss this with your parents but to aid a successful outcome, please don't go into the discussion with the attitude that they owe u a good holiday etc. They don't. They owe u nothing. That kind of attitude will only get their back up.0
