  • I get the feeling with some of the posters here one has to apologise for rather enjoying sex and thusly liking quite a lot of it. I have a Mirena coil but this may still lead to a pregnancy, and if that happened I would abort. I will never apologise for this stance.

I have always been very careful with contraception, and I was using the "belt and braces" approach of condoms and the combined pill when I fell pregnant at 19. Thankfully (for me - I know it would be devastating to others) I had an early miscarriage and there was no need to take things any further other than to be checked out to see that all was OK and to book an appointment for Depo-Provera.I know I am very lucky to have not had any physical or mental consequences from this.

None of this is actually about concern for unborn 'children' is it?

As I have already indicated that ultimately they should be able to abort I am not sure how you reach that conclusion.

What it is about is apportioning blame, ( dirty word I know) where it is due. If you are repeatedly irresponsible you should be called to account for it. However, I assume you do not agree with the notion that women can be "blamed" for failing to take care of themselves or their reproductive choices, you would far rather deem them as "unlucky"?

Not from me, I have four children;):rotfl:and have always been extremely fertile, so could perhaps have had ten if I hadn't made as sure as is reasonably possible that I was protected against an unwanted pregnancy.

I suppose though that it may suit some to think that those who counsel personal responsibility on the sexual front either don't like sex or aren't getting any......

What purpose does it serve to bring blame into it? How do you propose people be held to account?

Reproductive freedom has to apply to everybody, even people you personally believe don't deserve it.

I am, doesn't mean I have to agree with or practice everything that is decreed. They have a right to have it as a tenet of the faith though, and they don't condone those who do use birth control.

So blame is not a useful tool in society? We shouldn't ever blame?

They should have mandatory counselling perhaps?

How many times do we have to go over this?

Why are you so determined to paint women who have unplanned pregnancies as being at fault? Does it make pregnancy as punishment seem more palatable?

Belt and braces aren't an option for everyone, I couldn't take hormonal contraceptives for years. They still have a failure rate even with perfect use, and as far as I know we haven't come up with a way to make human beings perfect yet anyway.

Also, as barbarawright pointed out, not all pregnancies result from consensual sex.

Sorry, why are "belt and braces" not possible if you can't use hormonal contraception? Are there only two forms of contraception available, one of which is hormonal then?

Ordinary coil + condom or diaphragm
    Persona + coil
    Persona + barrier
    Condom + diagphragm

are 5 possible belt and braces combos without a hint of a hormone or an abortion in sight if an unwanted pregnancy is truly to be avoided at all costs.

I can only apologise on behalf of my 16 year old self for not being all that keen on getting a coil or diaphragm fitted.

Good to know that even strict condom use isn't enough to protect somebody from judgemental types deciding its all their own fault if they have an accidental pregnancy.
