Spill the beans... on how to minimise loo paper use

  • I've got a really cheap option that I use. Much cheaper than 50p a roll.
Alas, it only works when I'm at home.
After defecating, I jump into the shower and wash my backside.
I then come out of the shower and dry the area, then get on with my day.
Obviously there is a cost involved to periodic laundering of towels, but I bet it's cheaper than using toilet paper.
We obviously do have toilet paper at home, but we very rarely finish it and need more.
Think about this: if you accidentally got a chunk of poo on your hand, would you be content to wipe it off with a piece of paper and get on with your day?

    Agreed! :)
    No, I disagree.
The "Right" method jams against the wall and can cause premature tearing, whilst the "Wrong" method pulls the roll slightly away from the wall and lets it run free.

Every time I visit Costco, just about everyone has a bulk pack of loo rolls in their cart. It is almost mandatory!

  • I seem to have come on such a long journey when it comes to toilet technique.
Until I was about 20 I still lived in a house with no bathroom where the only loo was at the bottom of the backyard. You haven't lived until you've had to put your wellies on in the depths of winter .... fill a bucket with water .... trudge down to the loo (in total darkness of course with a torch) .... break the ice in the loo with the wooden stick conveniently left for the purpose .....do what you have to do ..... wipe your bum on yesterday's copy of The Daily Mirror ..... pour bucket of water down loo to flush because the WC is of course frozen.
Nowadays its a VERY luxurious victorian style (pure nostalgia) bathroom and I use Cushelle followed by ONE wet wipe. The folding technique is probably the most economical. I use three sheets folded in half .... wipe .... fold again ... wipe again .... fold again ... wipe again. Same technique with the (flushable) wet wipe.
I always monitor the price of Cushelle in Lidl. Every so often they're on promotion. The trigger price is when they come down to a unit price of just about 30p per roll.
Cushelle is a nice blend of reasonably soft but quite strong.
Final observation/question. Are "flushable" Wet Wipes TRULY flushable .... or is is just manufacturers hype. Do any of our sewage worker members know the answer. I do flush the "flushable" wipes ...... but still feel guilty!
    Thanks for reading my ramblings.
    Enjoy your day!

  • Sometimes I worry about the people posting here. Are they really serious about STEALING from hotels, supermarkets etc?

I am so glad that I don't have any employees. The thought that they disliked working for me so much that they would steal loo paper is a thought I don't want to have.
  • I keep a soap pump near the toilet filled with hand lotion/baby lotion/skin cleanser/whatever-you-want-to-use-up-cream-and-if-it's-too-thick-add-water-and-shake. One squirt on a sheet of toilet paper post-poo makes a cheap and flushable moist wipe! Repeat as necessary. Uranus becomes so clean it's transformed into a star. That's why the sun shines out of my RRRRRRs! :rotfl:.

    Cheapest?!
HOTELS: When you stay in hotels and b&b,s, get your money's worth by shoving a few spare rolls in your bag.
PUBLIC AMENITIES : get hold of a selection of security keys, and grab a few bulk size rolls. Sports centres too, gyms, clubs, railway stations, supermarkets toilets, etc.
WORKPLACE: grab a few at work.

What you do:be sporty, walk around with a sports bag..... Perfectly light to take it in with you for security!

We are supposed to be nice to new posters but that is theft however you choose to make light of it. I hope you are not an anonymous friend of mine. I would be very wary about letting you into my home again after a confession like that.
  • Really enjoyed this thread, it brought back memories of Izal and newspapers! Seriously, though, baby wipes are wonderful to use, but should never be flushed down the pan - the fabric does not disintegrate like paper and will catch on the smallest irregularity anywhere in the pipe.(Joints, invading tree roots etc) They are responsible for numerous blockages and the bane of plumbers countrywide. Save more money from not having to unblock the drains by disposing in the rubbish.......
  • I assume that NO-ONE is daft enough to put ordinary wet wipes down the loo - But please don't say we can't use the so-called flushable ones. Having experienced my great aunt's (shopkeeper) supply of the tissue paper which oranges used to come wrapped in and the hideous Izal shiny stuff at school, we have come on leaps and bounds but I go nowhere without my moist wipes. If I must be specific - paper first - 2 squares once or twice, then half a wet wipe, twice. one square of paper to dry. If getting into the shower I will skip the moist bit and just wash. BTW holiday in Greece where even paper cant go in the loo makes you think.

I think you will find most of the 'Toilet moist wipes are biodegradable and designed to be flushed down a mains toilet after use (surely no one flushes normal wipes that is asking for trouble).

You are not meant to use more than two per flush, they are designed to be safe for the environment, the toilet and the sewerage system, they are flushable and biodegradable, they won’t block sewage systems as they breakdown after flushing.

Macerator or septic toilets - you need to check if you can use them.
