If I go to a wedding I spend a lot of time (and money!) on my outfit - the last thing I'd want is to be handed a pair of pound flip flops.....

I guess if you are getting married in a boat, or on a beach, then it would be acceptable, but unless you have a 'theme' it goes with I'd look for something else.

Have to say it sounds like a weird idea to me.

    Me too...

Why would anyone want £1 flipflops at a wedding?

I also agree that the Americanised approach of 'favours' (UK spelling) is just, well, ugh.

Yup, have to agree. If it was a beach/themed wedding then maybe but for a normal wedding it just seems rather random. If I've gone to effort to choose a wedding outfit then I wouldn't want to wear £1 flipflops that won't go with it and won't even be in my size (small feet).
  • To be honest I think it's a daft idea.

I could understand if you were giving out favours of pretty leather ballet flats, but cheap flip flops seem like a "filler" gift rather than anything of merit.

Who would wear them? Is there any need to change shoes that your guests have probably put a lot of time into choosing? You are going to habd out cheap, uncomfortable flip flops that most likely wont fit everyone.

Why even the need for favours?
  • But many ladies will be wearing tights/stockings so they'd have to take them off in order to wear the flip flops, plus new ones always rub so there would be sore toes at the end of the evening whether they stayed in heels or swapped to the flops. If it gets raucous on the dancefloor, some might get crushed toes too and what if it's piddling down outside. Just because it worked at one wedding doesn't mean it will be a success at another - different guests/age groups etc. If favours are deemed necessary why not a nice slice of soap (I'm thinking the flavoured/patterned type ones from a 'loaf' wrapped in tissue paper or you can even get ones that look like fancy cupcakes?
    Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
    And now the final frame
    Love is a losing game
  • And I thought that wedding-guests sometimes got a mesh bag with some sugared almonds in it.

What's all this "wedding-favour" business and why do we want them? What is usual to give to wedding guests other than a meal/party and a nice time?

Cheap flipflops? No, I wouldn't be seen dead in them at a wedding reception/party or anywhere else unless it was on a beach
  • Maybe instead of getting them for a ll buy 20 or so pairs and place them in a basket to the side of the dance floor so if someone did want a pair they could help them self.

That way its the best of both worlds.

    Have a lovely wedding.

I’m back and more determined than ever!!!!!
  • The common thing now is to have a basket of flip flop so people can change shoes if their shoes are hurting....if you buy new shoes especially for a wedding and they cut in you would be thankful!

As for comments like "I also agree that the Americanised approach of 'favours' (UK spelling) is just, well, ugh. "
Times change, and "new traditions" come in. Why does it matter if its american, european or whatever!

OP, I wouldn't get everyone a pair as some wont want or need to change. Get enough for say 25-50% of the women guests.

    Good luck :)

We bought everyone a lucky dip lottery ticket and put it in an envelope on their names on them and put them on their tables - we then announed the winners during the evening - we had a few winners.
