My first post on this thread! My fiancee ad are aren't getting married for at least another years (as I'm still at uni and we want a house firts) but its been interesting read everyone's ideas!

I just wanted to add a quick idea re: wedding rings....................if your engagement ring was bought at hsamuels they give you 10% both yours and your oher halfs rings as long as you have the little voucher...................so if yours did come from there, then pester your beloved and see where he put it!

Had a think and thought about maybe little toy guns with either personalized (http://www.confetti.co.uk/shopping/newshop/searchresults.asp?cat=417) or just married ribbon(http://www.confetti.co.uk/shopping/newshop/productview.asp?cat=660&id=W62017) tied on them.
Or why not dress as gansters and get someone to take a photo of you and personalize them urself (by signing them like film stars or writing a personal message)

Good Luck when the big day comes
    :p

    Thanks - that's a really cool idea!

    Many congratulations! :T

I think that alot of jewellers do the discount thing. I got a diamond set in platinum (diamond from OH's family and it was alot cheaper than buying it "whole") at a small jewellers and they are giving us a 20% discount off our wedding rings. However, they just have the one shop in Lincoln...... not exactly a chain!

  • ***I'm going to post this here too so it doesn't disappear***

I have stumbled across this service and have asked the contact person if I could post his details here, as it is such a good offer.

The military prison in Colchester (where good armed forces folk who go bad go) runs a printing press and will print wedding invitations. Basically they can do allsorts so whatever you want they will try to make. They have a range of coloured card (lovely quality), you can have coloured fonts, photographs or other digital images put on the front. I've even been assured you can have a photo of you and your OH digitally relocated to a beach on the Bahamas at sunset if you desired it! They can't do embossing though.

The prices vary depending on size of invite, pages in order of service etc however as a rough guide ...
    invite 55p each excluding VAT
order of service - price more variable but VAT free
reply cards - haven't asked about these yet.

first two proofs are free (and are normally sufficient) additional proofs are £10 each. Time taken depends on the workload but to give you an idea he has quoted me two weeks from end of February.

at 55p +17.5% per invite I don't think you could make them cheaper. I'm going to download some photos from a stock photographers website (such as https://www.istockphoto.com) to make them a bit more personalised.

The gentleman to contact is Mr Lester Pearse, at lespearse@civilservants.co.uk

Hope this helps someone out. xx Tondella

  • Hi,

I'm just exhausted after having reading this post from start to finish. I did read some last week!

The impression I am getting from everyone is that it's your special day and no matter what other's say, you should do things the way you want to do them.

I haven't booked anything yet but I have decided to get wed possibly in early July this year. I have decided it would be good on a Sunday, no-one has to take the day off work and I don't pay an extortionate amount for a Saturday. We have chosen a civil ceremony in late afternoon followed by a buffet and maybe a band. These ideas were formed reading the posts! I did think about marrying in Portmeiron but it seems too expensive, so now I am looking for a venue that will have lots of greenery and be on the Wirral possible near Wallasey. Has anyone any ideas at all so I can start the ball rolling with actually booking the venue? There will probably be about 100 guests for the ceremony and buffet. It would be easier if it all happened at the same venue which would save on transport. My guests will be travelling from all over the place but we live in Wallasey so we have decided it would be good for us to be nearby.

I like the ideas for the cake and flowers from M&S, Sainsburys etc so I will have a look at them soon. We will be able to make our own stationery and will shop around for the dress and suit. As we already have our home set up, I think we will ask for vouchers. I have started my list and it seems to grow the more you think about the day...

i mean it is possible to do it on a low low budget i know. and we're going for a registry office and probabl going for mideek to save some money there. but the dress from monsoon would end up being the most expensive thing about the day!
No one needs to know how your budget was allocated apart from you. My situation is the opposite to yours. My wedding dress cost £30 plus shipping from a HK tailor on eBay - it will be the cheapest thing about my day! I think it's important that you wear something you will be comfortable in and will feel special in - it's a long day, a once-in-a-lifetime and so long as you feel happy and comfy then nothing else will stress you out. Of the weddings I've attended, all eyes were on the happy beautiful brides and no one paid much attention to the venues, food, favours, etc.

Contact your local registry office for a list of licenced venues. Use this to draw up a short list of places to visit. Book a couple of days off work and go round them all (you may need to book appointments but this is not always necessary - there is always someone on hand who can show you round). Draw up a list of questions to ask each venue eg availability, room hire, accomodation, corkage. Get their wedding brochures. Ask to see the actual licenced suite that will be used for the ceremony, and also one of the hotel rooms (you may want a larger room for yourselves and standard rooms for your guests). Make sure you feel happy with both the venue and the staff - expensive is not always better! We saw two expensive hotels in the same price range - one was rather snooty and the other was "nothing too much trouble". As soon as you make your choice, book the venue and contact your registry office. (In Scotland, you need an AP1 form from the venue to book the registar - I don't know what you do in England.)
  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I will see if I can find the registry on line first and if not get in touch with them. This seems the hard part of getting married!

Diamondsky, as i understand it you pay more for a registrar to come and marry you on a sunday than a saturday.
