    HI All,

Interesting discussion just got the 95 and trying to get the satnav funtion working !

I have loaded maps2go via nokia loader and can get gps to locate :money: position and show on map.

I am unsure how to show a route I can only do this if i connect via 3G with will be expensive long term, I cannot get it to show route without connecting.

would welcome some more info .

    Many Thanks

To avoid download charges you have to load the maps to a micro SD card using Nokia maploader. Once you have the maps in the phone there is no need for itto try and log on to download them.

I have the maps for, UK, Spain, Portugal, Australia and Portugal on a 2GB card which is now half full.

Just to make sure, you can set the phone up so it cannot try to log on when using the maps.

  • Zeberdy,

Once the requisite maps are on the phone, it shouldn't require any form of access. I disable network connectivity, and network based location, to be sure (I do lots of international travel - roaming data costs would cripple me!).

The process I use to search for, and view, the route is (in full for the sake of completeness):-
    1) Go to Options > Plan Route,
    2) For both Start and End Position,
    a) Click on, and select the GPS position, Landmark, or whatever,
    b) If landmark, select the landmark, this brings up a map,
    c) Click select.
    3) Click Options > Show Route
    4) wait........
    5) wait longer......

    You can now:-
    a
    i) By pressing up and down, view the test representation of the route,
ii) By pressing left, view the summary (right to get back),
iii) By clicking on a specific waypoint, go to the graph representation.

In the graphical representation, you can:-
    a) Press up and down to progress along the route

Certainly, with my config, (network access disabled, network location disabled, required maps downloaded and on phone) this all works and never attempts to download anything.

    Encantandor,

Yeah, it's rather lame, that "Delete All Maps" option. Plus, there's no way to cache maps on your laptop. When I'm travellling I just put the map on my phone for wherever I am at a time - this means I keep having to download the same maps, which is a tad annoying. I've sent a comment on the smart2go site with feedback - whether they take any notice is a different thing altogether.

Hi there peeps - wonder if any of you techy minded people can help me?

I'm going to get an N95 - which has sat nav - and this is goo because I've always wanted a Tomtom - so two birds one stone and all that!

So I hear you can buy the tom tom software from TomTom for your mobile - or it can be downloaded etc! Which is great because I have to borrow my dads tomtom when I want to go anywhere far away - and I like the tom tom software!

Now can you use the Nokias internal GPS for this or is it better to get an external bluetooth one? And do you get charged if you use the internal one on the tom tom software?

I understand that GPS is free on the nokia except when you want the thing to tell you to turn left or right etc - is this the same if you use a blue tooth receiever?

Can anyone help - am I on the right track or have I got completely the wrong end of the stick???

    Thanks

Unless it has changed recently, you can put the TT software on the phone but you need a external bluetooth GPS, the TT software does not recognise the internal GPS on the N95.

Since the N95 came out I have read that TT are going to upgrade their software to change this but nothing yet as far as I know.

It may just be rumour and wishful thinking of course and TT are doing nothing.

    Who knows.

Hi someone above mentioned using this in an aircraft. Could I use the GPS to store waypoints at pre-defined intervals and then plot them onto a map later? Tracking the aircraft's route would be just the sort of geeky and totally pointless thing I would do.

Storing the waypoints would negate the need for maps on the phone, they could presumably be downloaded onto the computer. Not even sure if this is possible.

Alternatively could I use a Holux 236 GPS to do the waypoint storing at regular pre-defined intervals?

    Thanks.

    Thanks for that!

Well I know I would have to buy a Bluetooth GPS reciever seperately - but as I travel several times throughout the year to different places on day trips with my younger sisters (half term and summer holidays etc) - and probably more if I had this on my phone - so I think it's a good idea to buy the tomtom software and gps blue tooth reciever - then at least I can transfer it to each new phone I get! And in the long run - it will be better than a tom tom - as it upgrades (the phone) each year or so! Also you only have to take out one device when you travel!

Plus I think it will work out cheaper than using the internal gps receiver - which I heard can charge £4.50 each time you use it!

Well I am getting my phone friday so I have until then to think about it all!

Using the internal GPS does not cost you anything as it is not using the internet, if you try to use Assisted GPS (which is only avaliable from v12 firmware update) then that does cost but it only downloads about 7kb each time you start the sat nav to get a signal lock

You can use route 66 which will work with the internal gps but you may need to leave your phone on the dash against the front window to try and keep the signal lock and you might not be able to see the screen properly but you will be able to hear the voice directions

I think the best thing to do is get an external bluetooth gps and leave that against your window then use tom tom and you will be able to position the phone where it is most comfortable to see the screen

    Hope this helps
