No idea how, but eventually seem to have it working isng Nokia`s smart2go.com website.
I know that I have to pay if I want turn by turn instructions, using the maps and GPS without turn by turn instructions is described as FREE.
I have had to set the phone to access network as required though. What I can`t find out is when this is required and what the cost might be.
If the maps are on the phone and it is using an inbuilt GPS receiver, I can`t see why it needs to access the network, but I may be wrong.
The people in the shop that suppkied the phone didn`t seem to know either.
The sim card I am using at the moment is a Voda contract SIM, but that might change.
Does anyone have any experience of how this works.
Thanks

I found this site which explains how it works a bit better may help see

If you are going to be using the GPS navigation function frequently, it would probably be more economical to by Tom Tom or something similar and install that on the phone instead.
Been thinking of getting this, do a bit of hill walking and would like the OS maps for it, the only other outlay is a bluetoth GPS reciever approx £30 on ebay.0 -

Thanks,
Reading that suggests that if you download the maps there is no extra cost. I will give it a try.0 -

Hi All,
I've found that on the N91, I could use the maploader to load whatever map I wanted onto the device (from a PC, hence no mobile phone data charges), and then turn wireless access off. I haven't however managed to buy any of the premium content - and I've tried!
Without the, and given how little space there is on a N95, I'm guessing it's downloading all the maps on the fly (there's no way 150 cities could be packaged with it in the tiny amount of memory it has). This will be classed as data, so will cost an absolute fortune (2.35GBP per MB is the current Vodafone rate!!!). When it refers to uncapped UMTS, that's most common in the US - where you can get unlimited data plans for around 50USD. Bloody lucky yanks ;(
IIRC with the maploader software you either have to:-
a) Download the map onto your phone via USB, direct from the internet, or
b) Download the map onto an SD card plugged into your PC, and then use that SD card in the phone.
The latter option may be required for the N95.
I'm really interested in this phone as I travel a lot outside the UK with work, and so having global GPS would be wonderful - but not if I have to pay roaming data charges to use it!
Would love to hear anybodies personal feedback on the phone,
Ian0 -
im getting mine delivered tomorrow, so will let you know

i was assured by orange that there is NO ongoing charges for the sat nav function on the phone,we will see......0 -

The maps are pre-installed on the phone and i can even use the phone in offline mode (so don't even need a sim card). So no extra cost is invloved.
I may think again now as tomtom5 would seem to be more suitable, but the 5 meg camera and wifi may make me think again. If I could use tomtom mobile maps on the Nokia N95 now then that would be more affordable.
TomTom Navigator currently doesn't support the N95's integrated GPS.0 -
OK, finally got there, thanks for all the help.
If you download the maps using Nokia Maploader there are NO ongoing download charges.
Drove 50 miles today with no sim card in the phone just to make sure. Once locked on, the GPS receiver remained locked on when when it was in a central glove box with no line of sight, very impressive.
I have D/L the maps for the whole of the UK, Spain, Portugal and Australia onto a 1 GB micro SD card and still have plentry of space left.
You have to pay extra if you want live navigation with turn by turn instructions but you don`t have to pay this if you don`t want to, you can just use the map and current GPS position to find the route, or you can get a list of the route to follow.
Thanks again.0 -
got mine coming today, very excited!
what is the extra software you have to download to get 'proper sat nav' (turn by turn instructions) and how much is it?
i was assured by orange that this was a full sat nav phone and there was no extra costs (i even explained that i was buying it in place of a tom tom unit)..... be interested as if its a silly price i will just send it back and pick up a smaller phone and buy a bargain sat nat unit i have seen mentioned elsewhere here on MSE...0
