They call it `Extra Services` you find it in the phone menu and pay using your phone either by CC or having it added to your mobile bill. I have not looked in detail but to have it for UK and Wetern Europe for 3 years is about £60. UK alone is £47.68 for 3 years.

You can apparently activate it for a week a month etc.

Australia is £4.50 for 7 days, £6 for 30 days and £54 for 3 years.
The USA is the same price as Australia.

So, if you were going to Florida on hols, you could just pay to have that `live` for the duration of your holiday.

I wanted it mainly for use on foot, so don`t actually need it, you can find your way without it as I have explained.

It is pretty impressive how it works on such a small device. It looks a bit like Google earth without the pictures. You are zoomed in to your street, you zoom out until you can see the earth, spin round till you are over Hong Kong (for example) and zoom right into street level again.

    Hope this helps.
  • ok, thanks!

im just waiting for the doorbell now.....its like christmas morning :)

Just noticed, there does not seem to be an easy way to remove maps from the SD card. The only option using the map uploader software is `delete ALL maps`.

As the maps are broken down into countries and/or areas, and given the system for real time navigation explained above, you would have thought that there would be a simple way to remove individual countries/areas when you have finished with them.

Going into the card using `My Computer` does`nt help either, but for someone more techie minded, there might be a way.

So, if you fill your SD card up with a number of countries, music, video, photos etc, and you need to make space on it, you may have to remove all your mas and re-download some. The England (90Mb) took nearly 2 hours.

Or just get the biggest Micro SD card available which seems to be 2Gb at the moment.

Yes, but only for a PROFIT, not giving it away.
  • Okay, I've now got my N95 (vodafone), and thus far I love it (apart from the Scan Barcode app, which I still can't get working).

A few bits and bobs about (my guesses) on the costs/chargin for GPS....

If you go to Tools > Settings > General > Positioning methods, you find three options which can be independently turned on/off:
    - Bluetooth GPS
    - Internal GPS
    - Network based

By default (on vodafone) the internal GPS and Network based are both enabled - hence you will probably be charged for using positioning by default, as the Network Based will class as data or similar. However, turning that option off leaves just GPS, which should be free - I'll be up in arms otherwise.

On the maps program, it appears that there _aren't_ any street-level maps for the UK on the phone by default (certainly I can't see any when I don't have my sim card in). Hence, if you've got the internet access enabled, it will download the streetmaps, again charging you for data. I've yet to check out whether I can use the smart2go to download maps via my laptop, but I see no reason why it won't work.

    Scan barcode app???
Have`nt even seen that, what`s it for?

You DL the maps using maploader on CD, you can either connect phone to laptop via supplied cable or put micro sim card into card reader.

It is quicker using card reader.
  • Although the subscription is somewhat offputting, it works out alot cheaper than the current GPS offerings (except a dedicated GPS unit of course) because whenever maps change you won't pay for the changes, and you can use it on as many devices as you like (unlike TomTom's mobilephone software, which you need to purchase a license for every time you buy a new handset).
  • The Scan Barcode thing can be found in Menu > Office > Barcode. I've a feeling it's a vodafone thing. The idea is that you can use the camera to scan barcodes. It's largely useless, but email addresses and other info can be put on barcodes, and it may be useful if you're looking around Ikea trying to decide what furniture you want....

Yeah, maploader is what I use as well (to memory card) - it's faster than downloading as needed, and _vastly_ cheaper.
