Moral dilemma do I refund?

I put a coffee table on eBay as collection in person. The listing stated the location

Somebody bought and paid via PayPal when I texted her the address she said it was too far as she had put up to 5 miles in the search criteria and I'm about 20 miles from her

She's not asked for a refund. But I feel kind of bad keeping her money even though I'm going to have to relist and gaff about longer

What do you lot think?

You should feel bad, you can't just keep the money. All she needs to do is claim through paypal and she'll get a refund anyway. Best to to mutually cancel the transaction and avoid the hassle.

  • I think it's a given you can't keep her money if she doens't want it, and you can't really sell it on again if she's paid for it or she could open a INR against you. I don't understand how her search could be so off... unless she hasn't updated her address, or you are selling it from a location other than the one you are registered with on ebay.
Did she explicitly say she wanted to cancel the transaction? If not, I would send her an email and just ask if that's what she wanted. If so, ask her to cancel it in her ebay account and you can then refund her and relist it.

  • Yes she did say she'd moved. On one hand I'm miffed that I'm now going to have the table cluttering up the place and I've got the hassle of relisting because she didn't do her search properly (eBay distance search is 10 or 25 miles so I guess she put in 25). I believe in law and eBay land I have the right to keep the money as I've listed the item correctly and she is the one reneging on a binding contract...

On the other hand I feel I should refund the money (£10.50) so it's an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other.

She did say by text that she wouldn't pick it up as its too far and she hasn't asked for a refund

Seriously, you're asking if you can just keep their money?

Errrr, if you really need me to say it - no.

  • Hi,

why not meet her half way, least you'll get the table out of your way and not feel guilty about keeping the money, and also get good feedback.
  • I only have the option of 10 or 25 miles so methinks she is stretching the truth. Probably just changed her mind.

In "eBay land" you certainly do not. If she opens an INR dispute, she'll get her money back.

As I understand it we have a contract. She agreed to buy the item as described. She is the one who would be wanting out of the contract not me. As I see it she should have read the description more thoroughly. It's not my fault that she didn't.

The devil is winning out here. I'm keeping the cash and waiting to see if she raises a dispute. Personally if I were in her position I'd put it down to my own stupidity. Thanks for the input on both sides people

One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
