It's tragic that instead of giving a proper airing to the Austrian school of economics, 'Libertarian' has become shorthand for 'licentious'.

Don't get me wrong, I think people should be free to express themselves sexually as they please as long as they aren't hurting anyone else or involving anyone that is unable to consent.

It's just that I think that Liberal/Libertarian means that you leave people to get on with their lives as much as possible

Agreed - 'that government is best which governs least'.

Sadly, I think the libertarian 'brand' has become too tarnished to be usable.

A friend at a party a few weeks ago, when we were discussing something similar, said some of my views were "dangerously" libertarian...

Hmm, a 'Libertarian' party that wants the Government to spend more than half of GDP, or at least that's what the Wiki page implies.

I'm not surprised they're small fry: why vote for a Libertarian party that wants to control everything?

Ah I missed that - also the 50% tax on £100k+ is far too much. However their social policies are pretty much on the money (legal euthansia, liberalisation on drugs, secularisation of government etc).

Saying that, I wouldn't want a pure libertarian party - mainly because I think there should be a public health system (although I'd prefer an insurance-backed system rather than the NHS).

Ah, yes, the hallowed 'lurch to the centre' - the results of which have worked so stunningly well for this country's present administration and which have been such a roaring success across Europe.

yeah, but we, nor any european state, have a 2-party set-up.

Instead, in a multi-party election, lurching to one of the extremes might win if the other parties all fight for votes in the middle.

I'm afraid you are entirely wrong. There are other parties in the USA. They just stand absolutely no chance at all of winning an election.

Much like the system here, in fact. Ask any Green or UKIP candidate.

I used to think of I was a 'libertarian' because I believed the government should actively try and limit itself to only things that it could improve, which would not improve without intervention.

However, as you rightly point out true libertarianism is to minimise government as much as possible to increase personal freedom as greatly as possible. Thus the NHS, or even a government regulated system would not meet that definition.

Having said that, only someone crazy would suggest the complete abolition of government and all regulation, which is the pure libertarian ideal.

Mitt Romney...? ROTFL..the man said he would create 12m jobs didnt he? Surely the words of a crazy man. Where will they come from? thin air? It just shows...even since Julius Ceasars time,if you give the multitudes a bit of the old flannel and tell them what they want to hear, they are happy in their ignorance and will vote for you....err...and then vote you out when you dont deliver.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    An 'interesting' little investment site.

I'm making enquiries as to whether I can put all this into a SIPP. I'm thinking of £100K on Hilary Clinton to be president 2012!
