I have come home with £15 worth of strawberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries from fruit picking. I need to get a move on to get them all ready for the freezer although I may keep some strawberries for desserts this week. It is amazing to think how much these would actually have cost from a supermarket, I would have got more but I got bored picking the gooseberries and blackcurrants. I have just spent £6 something on salad and some other bits, I am hoping this should last me much of this week.

I only have 3 nights left by myself including tonight and I have quite a lot I would like to do in that time so I might have to tear myself away from MSE.

Off to watch the first of these programmes you are all chatting about.

I would rather have the days as I get more done, I am missing sharing what I have done through the day with Mr AJM...roll on Friday night. I am glad I have a lot on at work this week to keep me busy some nights.

I have watched the food one but then realised that my jobs wouldn't get done if I watched the other one and good job I stopped. Since then I started to make a date and walnut loaf for the birthday present and realised I didn't have enough sugar so had to go to the shop. That is due out of the oven in 20 minutes. I have spent the last hour topping and tailing 1.25 kg of gooseberries , they are all washed and in freezer bags ready for the freezer. I need to make a start on the blackcurrants next as the strawberries will be easy and can be done as I eat them as I can't see many of those getting as far as the freezer. I think I possibly picked too much fruit :rotfl:

We are also in strawberry heaven.

What are you making with the gooseberries? We have some bushes but only planted last year so now starting to bear fruit.

Crumble to start with, either on its own or with Apple or rhubarb. I would like to have a go at gooseberry fool too.

Given up on the blackcurrants for the night. Topped and tailed a third, the rest are washed and bagged and I will decide whether I can be bothered tomorrow. Small portion of strawberries ready for breakfast and lunch tomorrow.

I haven't heard from Mr AJM today :(

You don't need to top and tail blackcurrants if you're freezing them - just freeze them in a plastic box and when you come use them give the box a good shake and the tops and tails fall off! Put the frozen blackcurrants in a bowl of water and the tops and tails rise to the top and they're fairly easy to just lift off with a spoon.

    HTH.

PS - works for red and white currants as well, not sure about gooseberries as have never frozen them

good tip - our first crop of blackcurrants is due any day now. I keep trying one but they are still a bit sharp. Strawberries are nearly over but raspberries are going strong, plus some of them are autumn fruiting to extend the season. Yum

joedenise - thanks for the tip and for posting, the remaining blackcurrants are now in the freezer. I love how helpful everyone is on MSE. I just need to sort and eat the strawberries now.

No MSE evening for me. Went to watch a ballet with some work friends, which I paid for a few weeks ago but we had dinner out and I treated myself to an ice cream in the interval. Very tired now, can't wait for Mr AJM to get home so I can go back to a quiet life.
