  • hello thanks for posting the aldi stuff...i picked up amassive tin of peas in the 99p shop for the sum of suprisingly enough 99p.....it was a catering size tin with i think 2kg of peas in it...on opening it i poured it in to a big casserole dish covered with cling and stored it in the fridge....did this on monday and for 5 tea times i have/will ladled out enough for 4 to have with tea....i have some left for the weekend stillin the fridge and with the rest i today made pea and ham soup using the remainig peas an onion water and 2 ham stock cubes didnt have any real ham to use....i have just had 2 bowls for lunch and it if fab...their are 2 bowlfuls in the fridge

so the maths 28 portions of peas with meals and 4 portions as soup so 32 portions

    99p divided by 32 is 3p ish a portion

i did wonder if any could be frozen but didnt try it tbh we arent sick of peas as they were veg with tea and i like all soup...am going to look out for these bargain big tins in future
    onwards and upwards

tessie bear - you can freeze tinned foods if you want but I wouldn't leave them in the freezer too long as they are generally quite soft to start with and may well be mushier on defrosting.

I would only do this if it was something I couldn't use up in a few days and freeze as soon as the can has been opened.

  • Tessie that is great, it shows what can be done with a humble although catering size tin of peas :D
I remember when mushy peas were 4p a tin and everyone got loads of them.

  • I still have about 6 tins of the blooming things to use up BB :) I also have a huge tin of apricots that as yet I haven't opened they cost me 99p also.

Tonight I am using up some lettuce, the lone tomato, the last of the sweet pepper diced up some cucumber a jacket spud and some grated cheese with some sliced beetroot which will help to empty my fridge a bit.

I have some carrots that I am turning into carrot and coriander soup for next week.I also have a large cabbage that I'm not sure what to do with yet,but it will probably be steamed and used with dinners next week. Trying not to go shopping until the middle of next week so I shall be using as much as I can from what I already have in store.
Baking tomorrow morning as its Sunday and I like to fill up the cake tins on Sundays. I have found a honey, apple and cinnamon tea loaf recipe that I am going to give a go to as I have four wrinkly apples in the bowl.

Have made a root veg soup with pasta today which we had for lunch today and will have tomorrow as well. There will be another couple of portions to freeze for some time next month.

Have also made up some stew packs for the freezer to use later, along with some stewing beef or chicken or maybe chickpeas/beans later.

Well BB thanks for posting and also for the ideas. All the items either store well in a cold dark place or freeze well, so I will be stocking up to use for after the offer finishes
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)
