cleaning toilets

We live in a really hard water area and the toilets in our house get limescale inside the bowl on the back where the water flows down at the most vertical point (if you see what I mean).
1. I use one of those clip thingies inside rhe rim to keep is freshish but I think they are very dear, so would like to stop.
How necessary are they ? If I stop will the toilet get even worse ? I dont like the bloo things that go in the cistern.
2. I chuck some bleach down it once a week and scrub it with the loo brush, but this doesnt touch the limescale so I use limelite or similar every couple of weeks. Also very expensive.
One toilet in particular has really bad blackish marks along the sides at the very bottom (under water). The limelite doesnt shift it because by this point of course it diluted.
I've tried vinegar and bicarb but doesnt seem to help, maybe the wrong amounts ?
Please can someone tell me a good cheap OS or otherwise method to get these blinkin toilets clean ?
Thanks for any advice,
Jill

I got some of the harpic limescale remover and found it brilliant (not OS i know so sorry!!!) I used the brush to swish away as much water from the bowl as possible and then put a good squeeze round it, left for an hour, gave it a good scrub and it was gone!
Very impressed0 -
well I scooped out most of the water and then poured a bottle of coke down it and keft overnight.
Didn't really make much difference unforunately.
So tonight I am going to scoop the water out AGAIN and then try using some limelite or other anti limescale stuff on the marks direct. As said, not very OS but I just want the thing clean.
Sigh.
Thanks for the congrats pink, its been a hard slog so far, hideous morning sickness (well, 24-7 sickness really!), the worst yet, but at last I am beginning to come out of it. Been very hard to plan and cook etc whilst feeling grotty so things have gone a bot AWOL since the start of the year.Jan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

Congratulations. Morning (all day) sickness is awful isn't it? I had it with all mine, and I agree, trying to cook when the smell of food makes you want to chuck is not easy! Hope you feel better soon.0 -
Once a week, I empty a very cheap bottle of vinegar in the bowl and leave it overnight. The next morning I just flush it. Please note that when I say I empty the bottle in the toilet, I mean I run it under the rim, as one does with harpic etc. That little veneer of vinegar that remains keeps the bowl free of limescale.
But it needs to be done regularly, and I wouldn't be surprised if in some areas of very hard water it took two "treatments" per week.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I use Asda limescale removing bleach and it works really well - as far as I can see it's exactly the same as Harpic and at about 70p a bottle it's about half the price.
I know it's not really OS but I think some jobs are just worth buying the proper products for.Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
Have you tried bicarb of soda? sprinkle some on the hard hit area, then vinegar, this will cause a re-action, so put loo seat down, might work!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0
