Ghastly toilet under-rim (Don't read if eating)

I'm sorry I know I've seen this somewhere on here but can't find it. We have a funny shaped toilet with a somewhat exaggerated rim, and under there is horrible. I've squirted it with every cleaner known to woman but gravity makes it slide down into the bowl so under the rim is always brownish and disgusting (sorry - hope you aren't eating). But did I read that someone soaked newspaper in something (vinegar perhaps) and wodged it up under the rim overnight with miraculous effect. Please can anyone tell me if this is what I do: if I can't clean under there I'm going to have to junk this v expensive bowl for one without such a big rim, and that'd be very wasteful/ Help please !

Hi morganlefay,
There are a few ideas on this thread for getting rid of limescale from under the rim of the toilet: REALLY Stubborn limescale!

Hydrogen peroxide ... I think.0

TESCO TOILET LIMESCALE CLEANER - in a blue bottle, about 72p. Never quite sure how much Tesco are charging from week to week). Leave as long as possible. You may have to do it a couple of times if it's right under the rim. Try cleaning under the rim with a bottle brush after leaving it over night. It will work - I promise!!!
And I don't make it, work for Tesco or anything like that but I really think I ought to be on commission or something by now considering the amount of times I recommend it to people!!
Good Luck.:rotfl: :rotfl:

I'm not sure if it works on limescale, but my fav trick (thanks to OS) is to pour some white vinegar into the cistern and flush. With 3 boys my bathroom always had a certain 'air' about it. This trick seems to work.
(even better is to take lid off cistern, flush and when it's just taking the last of the water pour in the vinegar so you get a higher concentrate around the rim).

I hate to say this but .... whatever you use, I think it needs to be the Marigolds, a scourer, cleaner of your choice ... and actually get the scourer under the rim with your fingertips
Once it's clean, you then need to get your Marigold-covered fingertips and the scourer under there every week or so.
It's worth remembering that whatever lurks under the rim is not that nasty - all that stuff gets flushed away. What you're dealing with is probably only limescale & mould, so no need to get too ill thinking about it :rotfl:
We've got two sparkly, brand-new loos at the moment, which I'm trying to keep that way.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
We had a nasty brownish residue just visible as the U bend disappeared out of sight, which having read some tips on here I attacked with a pumice stone, and it disappeared in less than a minute. Obviously under the rim is tricky to get at with a traditional pumice, but how about one of those flat abrasive things on slim handles which you can buy to take the rough skin off your feet? That should fit under the rim I would think, would be usable again and again, and no need to get your fingers too close to the yuck area!0

do you have or could you borrow a steam cleaner. a blast of steam gets rid of lost of inaccessible gunk and boy can you see it coming off.0

Urrrrgh. It looks like the rubber gloves then as I've tried all known limescale products and the problem is they don't stay there long enough. Thank you so much everyone for so many helpful ideas. The additional joy is that the seat won't stay up so as you clean you wrestle with the seat (v heavy wood one) which likes to slam down and hurt your fingers.
Thin how virtuous I'll feel when I've done it. I think I must start watching Aggie and her chum, much as I hate them !!
Many 'thank yous'    :beer:0 -
I have to add my recommendation for the marigolds as I switched to this method after watching how clean is your house - works for me even if I don't enjoy doing it, I don't even need a scourer just a sponge pad thingy.Never let your sucesses go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.:beer:0

How are you lot getting so upclose and personal with what's lurking under your rim, unless friends and neighbours are lowering you head first into the bowl:eek:
I just squirt a dollop of thick bleach up there and hope for the best.
I did see the Kim & Aggie marigold technique but when i tried it, and I don't know if it was because I was using a pair of rubber gloves well stricken with age or what but when I'd finnished grinding off the grot and removed my hand one of the rubber glove fingers had fell off. Stopped me biting my nails tho:eek: :rotfl:Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0
