Hopefully the limlite will work - but once it has maybe try Quasars idea of the vinegar once or twice a week, much better than the chemicals, and you can pick up value vinegar really cheaply!!!
If it hasnt worked, i would try Crazychiks bicarb and vinegar, if that doesnt shift it, i dont think anything will!!!!
Oh, and congrats on the pregnancy, hope the morning sickness eases soon xxx0 -
thanks for all the tips and all the congrats! This is my 3rd baby, the other are 3 and 2 so its all a bit frantic in our house. Think I am a bit too tired to tackle the toilet tonight, maybe tomorrow .....

I'm not sure how this would work under the waterline, but I see you're not averse to scooping out the water anyway, so here goes.
i soak kitchen towel in neat white vinegar, then press the soaked towel agains the side of the loo. I leave it for as long as I can (sometimes an hour, sometimes most of the day - luckily we have two loos) then I wipe away.
I've found this works with other built up limescale too, for example the jets in the bath.
Stinks for a while, but it's worth it.0 -
Thaniks, but I seriously think our limescale is too severe for vinager as I've tried for example the shower head in a bag of vinegar overnight and it made no difference. So I'm going to try the limelite (cos I have some already) and if that doesnt work then vinegar and bicarb.

All of the above are rather temorary solutions. I had this problem in a blue toilet so it looked realy awful. I now use no limescale cleaners at all in the loo and we are in a hardwater area. We invested in a little gadget which has wires on which wind around your water inlet pipe and change the ions in the water. This solved it within a couple of weeks. It costs a couple of pence electric to run each week and lasts at least 10 years. Cost about £45-a longterm investment as it is also stopping the scale in washer and dishwasher because it is on the inlet pipe.

Not OS solution but I bought some W5 limescale remover from Lidl at 99p a bottle which worked a dream on a particularly bad case of limescale recently.
Thinking aloud here - but maybe add some bicarb to the cistern occasionally - bicarb softens bath water so nicely maybe it can reduce the build up of limescale in the toilet also?0 -
well another day passwed with me not feeling like trying any more solutions, felt reallt grotty today, husbands friend came over to see us this evening and has just gone so am only just logging on before I finally get to bed.
angelatgraceland - how do I know where the water inlet pipe is ? This looks like a great solutio0n, I am fed up with limescale in the bath, shower, round the taps, and as you say god knows what its doing to the appliances.
kittykat, I dont think the bicarb in the cistern would work as the whole cistern worth of water is emptied each time so you might as welll just put it down the toilet - so to speak!!Jan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

I live in very hard water area, we were getting through showers and other water electricals at a terrible rate, so we went for a water softener, we were fighting a losing battle with limescale. I know you have to fill the box with salt but I use less cleaning products as the hard water doesn't cancel it out.0

hi all, I'm after a bit of advice re toilet cleaner as I've just ran out of bleach. Is there a cheaper and/or better way of cleaning a loo? I read somewhere that you can sprinkle baking soda in the bowl then spray with vinegar and scrub as usual, does that sound like a good idea to you OS experts? I'm new to this whole OS thing and don't want to end up dissolving my new loo with a chemical reaction!
Thanks0 -
Hi nozzy,
There's an earlier thread that should help you with your loo so I've added your post to it to keep the replies together.
