    Surprised anyone stays with BT?
Well I'm currently paying BT £13pm for line rental and Anytime calls. There's probably cheaper out there, but it doesn't seem too unreasonable.

I dont think there is any justification for the price rise not when we have already had several in past 2 years. Either BT are being wholly greedy or they are using line rental to cross subside other parts of the business. Personally I think they are being greedy, they deserve to loose business
  • The answer is to leave B.T. with all their long tie-ins and crippling prices.
Many things are virtually NO cost to BT. One example is connecting a call, which is all automated. This is proven by them selling bulk line and calls to the likes of Zen, who then charge me 1.5p daytime, 1.0p nights and weekends, along with NO call connection fee, no contract tie-in and per second billing. All these 'Fees' and price hikes are just a crafty way to push everyone onto the Option 3 call package. B.T. have overheads, but they should be covered by their extortionate line rental charge.
I expect hell to freeze over before joining B.T. again

Interesting. What's the sound quality like with VOIP? (I've heard varying results with Skype.)
Are there issues with using extensions around the house away from the router, or getting Caller ID?
And does an answerphone work as normal?

The line quality as been much better quality than my BT line no problems. You can run extensions anywhere. Caller id works as normal. I don't use the answer phone service but is American voice. I even registered my address with emergency services I know this works as when I had to dial 999 recently they knew my address. As been my main replacement land-line for over five years and I can say it's been very reliable it is Virgin cable internet dependant which as also been very reliable for me. There is fall over so if your line ever goes down you can reroute calls to any number. Vonage isn't like Skype that you use via a PC the phone is still connected even when your PC is off it as it's own box connected to the router. I think there are others that run similarly but not tried them.

On another note I think it's about time BT customers had the option of naked DSL internet without the phone rental part it's not needed I gave up with BT the line was awful and trying to get it fixed was a nightmare and the internet appalling kept dropping. Another option if you don't have cable is a LLU operator like O2 who's bundled line and internet is considerably cheaper than BT.

Much the same here. £10pm (Line Rental Saver) for line rental with just the evening and weekend calls included - handy for the 0845/0870 option, though saynoto0870 makes that largely unnecessary.

Question is, though, what's that going to go up to in November when my contract expires?

Limited options for me - no LLU exchange makes internet access relatively expensive, and a BT line does offer a few advantages that others don't.

However (and the BT Rep will doubtless be feeding back to BT on this thead).............this last increase is the final straw. Pure greed to feed shareholders' demand for dividends and current directors' bonuses, rgardless of any long-term damage to the company, which won't bother existing directors at all. That's it - if LRS increases beyond the £10.75pm currently being charged I'm waving farewell to BT whatever the downside might be.

[I see that LRS stays at £129pa - low enough to tempt me to stay, but only if the 'free' evening and weekend calls remain included, as they are now.]

A couple of years ago I was able to leave BT on the basis that their price hike would have an adverse affect on me financially. This was a clause set out by BT & you had a certain amount of time to take up the offer.
I still had a couple months left on my contract &,despite me being told I would not have to pay any penalty charges to leave, they still tried to charge me £22,which I've not,nor am I,going to pay.

Also she has gone internet with a very good little company plusnet - again with happy results for a light internet user. And again this is in a non cable district.

You didn't get very far - Plusnet are owned by BT... :p

It was exactly the same with my mum, older people seem to be very cagey about moving to a new phone provider. What did it for my mum is the charges for sending you a paper bill. Something like £5 per bill (in fact with BT it's probably more).
She went over to post office and was very pleasently surprised - not only the tariffs somewhat cheaper and no extra rental charges for "free" calls at evenings and weekends like BT have also post office send you out the paper bill with no charge.

Also she has gone internet with a very good little company plusnet - again with happy results for a light internet user. And again this is in a non cable district.

I have talktalk ... the phone is on the anytime tariff which gives you the 24/7 phone calls at 0p per minute. The internet was until recently the 40 gig limit which I personally never get near... now it's unlimited. Speed wise it's adequate but better than I got with BT. Of course they depend on how many other users are on the pipe at the same time.

To anyone there ... do change to some other provider get away from BT .... a truly dreadful company.
    :T
    .....

    You've got to laugh.

This "very good little company" Plusnet, actually does national TV advertising about its Good Honest Broadband from Yorkshire. Yes, when you call you probably get 'Eee Bah Gum' rather than Indian accents from the call centre, but apart from that this "very good little company" is actually BT "...a truly dreadful company". Just their way of ensuring that if you're defecting from the nation's favourite, they stand a chance of keeping you by offering better prices and decent service.

EDIT - just noticed I was beaten to this. Sorry folks
