    Orbitting is stupid, and just suggests that in those circumstances, the middle lane hoggers aren't actually creating an obstruction per se.

    A polite couple of horn taps and a point to the left from my Mrs seems to give most MLH'ers the message.

    In Germany they enforce against both wrong lanes and tailgaiting, but that's because they haven't been given priority to enforce an arbitrary speed limit that was set when cars had a top speed of 10mph less than it and single circuit front & rear drum brakes.

    1. Pull back into the inside lane and I guarantee that next time you are approaching a slow moving vehicle noone will let you pull out to pass.
    2. Motorway signage is so bad that you can never discern whether the inside lane runs into an exit lane, an interchange, or merely an indication that there are options ahead.
    Middle lane all the way for me.

    That's not to say I support lane indiscipline.

    I am a strong advocate for the death penalty for those who abuse filter lanes by steaming down one such lane, indicating, then switching (crimes against humanity).

    As for those who let them in? Minimum 2 years inside and compulsory crushing of their vehicle for aiding and abetting.

    More self-appointed traffic cops, busy watching others on the road instead of concentrating on their own driving.

    If you're in lane 3, overtaking traffic in lanes 1 and 2, you aren't in a position to judge whether someone is middle lane hogging or not.

    From lane 3, you can't tell whether someone in lane 2 is gaining on someone in lane 1.

    All you're doing is committing road rage against anyone in the middle lane on a non-congested motorway.

    Seems to me Crabman that you are being an apologist for people who wilfully ignore the concept of lane discipline.

    And overtaking on both sides is not inherently dangerous. The onus should always be on the driver making the manoeuvre (in this case, changing lanes) to verify that there is nothing occupying that lane.

    By stating that it's dangerous to overtake on both sides, what you are really saying is that it is acceptable for someone to move from one lane into another without looking -- for that is the only 'danger' of passing on the left.

    I don't mean to sound rude, but;

    1. If you are you looking far ahead in the distance (say quarter to half a mile away - which you should be doing anyway, considering the braking distance needed at motorway speeds), you should be able to spot a slow moving vehicle from some distance away, since you will be catching up with the slow moving vehicle and the gap between you and the slow vehicle will be decreasing. Therefore, unless you are looking just past your bonnet, there should be plenty of time to switch lanes in good time.

    2. The signage for exit lanes, and interchanges are placed usually at least a mile away (and they're usually placed at 1 mile and 0.5 mile intervals), and to travel one mile at 60mph will take 60 seconds which should be plenty of time to switch lanes. Also, where the inside lane turns into an exit lane, the lane lines (short lines, big gaps), will turn into hazard lines (long lines, short gaps).

    I find this isn't true at all.

    Indeed, I am often the driver who breaks the spell compelling the convoy to use the right lane and the right lane only (I use 2 lane motorways as that's all we have in redneck country up North) by pulling in to the left and keeping the same distance behind the car I'm following.

    Once I've done this, I usually see a load of other drivers doing the same thing -- and it's rare that the driver behind me closes up. Most drivers appreciate the effort -- I find that 9/10 only stay on the right hand lane for fear of the morons who won't move.

    Said morons who happen to be at the front of the queue (usually travelling at 60 for no good reason) usually eventually pull in with much tutting and gesticulating. But pound to a penny they wouldn't have done if someone hadn't broken the spell.

    I just do MSE driving, pulse and glide and slip streaming not interested in which lane. 86 mpg out of the Panda (This will get the "think about the children" brigade wound up).

    If im doing 70, why should I move to the inside lane where I will soon need to overtake slower vehicles so will be continually changing lanes, dangerous/extra tyre wear. Theirs an overtaking lane if you want to break the law or overtake me.
    Whats the problem?

    Yep that's the mentality of a MLH

    There are actually 2 (or more for certain stretches of motorway) overtaking lanes and you are hogging one of them.

    All lanes except the left hand lane are overtaking lanes.
