Lane discipline.

Driving back from Cornwall. it struck me that on two-lane dual carriageways people overtake and then pull back to the nearside lane (in general). On motorways, people often hog the middle lane and even hang about in the outside lane for too long with faster traffic behind. Why the difference?

Personally I always go back into the nearside lane regardless of where I am driving - beit dual carriageway or motorway.
Overtake the car - truck in front then get back into the correct lane, simply sitting in the middle lane on a motorway really p****s me off, a lot of folks see a white van and think F you im in my lane so to speak.
If lane discipline was better then perhaps tail backs would be less ? who knows !You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
Middle lane hoggers are my main pet hate on motorways. IMHO they should be prosecuted for driving without due care. They clearly don't appreciate that they reduce a 3 lane motorway into a 2 lane one because by default they are blocking the inside lane as well.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0

It's probably down to whoever decided to call motorway lanes "slow" and "fast". Not many want to be the "slow" driver so they stay out of that line, even though it's completely wrong.0

Middle Lane hoggers.
Step 1 - Overtake them
Step 2 - Go to lane 1
Step 3 - Let them overtake you
Step 4 - Repeat steps 1 and 2 and make them feel dumb. They all quickly move to lane 1.

All good except Step 4 does not really work for many, why should they feel dumb? just pass and progress on your journey safely and stop worrying about what other drivers are doing, let the Police police the road that is what we pay them for.0 -
Perhaps instead of building four-lane motorways, we should build two two-lane ones lol.Je suis sabot...0

Maybe it is time we changed the law to allow overtaking on both sides like some other countries. Something needs to be done to free up the motorway lanes that are almost empty during periods of congestion. funnily enough, this only makes things even worse. Can't think why.0

How is this helpful? All you're doing is increasing the probability that you'll be involved in a collision. If they're hogging the middle lane, they clearly don't realise what they're doing wrong, so as far as they're concerned, you're just some oddball who is constantly speeding up and slowing down around them. They aren't likely to realise you're a self-appointed traffic cop.Maybe it is time we changed the law to allow overtaking on both sides like some other countries. No. This would be dangerous and is quite simply a poorly considered response to pacify those who have little patience and don't care what happens as long as they can get ahead and save precious seconds on their journey time.
The present system works well, we quite simply need more trained traffic police on the roads to enforce the existing laws.0 -

They won't chase after people for hogging the middle lane, just as they don't sort out slow drivers. It's been drummed into us over the last 10 years or more, that the ONLY cause of accidents is SPEEDING. To go back on that would kick up a right sh*t storm.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Affectionately known as 'orbiting'.
I haven't done it personally but my friend's record is four orbits before the other driver got the message.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0
