I wouldn't mind smart jeans and t-shirt (clean, not ripped and no logos etc) as long as the wearers of said outfits were properly "groomed" (lovely old-fashioned word), i.e. washed and styled hair, manicured nails, nice make-up on the women (men's optional), clean shoes etc, smelling fragant and happy to be there.

Make up is surely also optional for women. :o

I would say that jeans can never be seen as smart.

Nothing wrong with going for comfort, I wouldn't be wearing something to a wedding that wasn't comfortable. You obviously wear clothes every day so some things must fit/suit you.
Leggings/T shirt..... jeans/top. Nothing I'd really often want to be seen in, but then nobody's looking at me and I won't bump into anybody I know as I don't know anybody :)

I absolutely agree here. I would always wear at least dark colours if not black and of course smart clothing to a funeral. The exception being if the family request otherwise.

Also I would never wear black or white to a wedding. Surely people don't need to be told this.:o

I think this thread shows just how we all have our own opinions and what one person considers suitable another might not.

For a funeral, again, I couldn't care less what people turned up like. I'll be dead. So my best friend comes in a red dress or whatever, i think the fact she'd be mourning my death is a bigger issue than what she wears. BUT that is just to me, others may well be different.

Jeans and a smart shirt can make a bloke look remarkably turned out, much better than trousers that he isn't used to wearing and are uncomfortable.

i think the thing we are missing here, is that these are the Bride and Grooms guests. Who they'll know really well. And I doubt very much they care what the hell there friends are wearing as they have other more important issues going on.

I have never ever known people to be as critical as what they are over weddings.

Never had my hair styled, I have it cut. Never had a manicure, I use toe-nail clippers on nails that break/are super-long.
Makeup .... I've got eye-liner and some dried up mascara.
    Clean shoes - check.
    Smelling fragrant - check
Happy to be there..... depends if I'm going to be judged or not.

with our wedding i'm not that fussed, i went to one wedding this year and it was a sea of massive silly hats, when are you going to wear a hat again? never thats when, another where it was a lot more of a normal dress code

the future mrs s.s bought a dress for about £20 and wore it to 2 weddings.
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?

Last year I was at a wedding. Brides sister was bridesmaid and her boyfriend was unable to make the actual wedding as he was working with no way to get off. He did attend the evening reception and arrived wearing.... tracksuit bottoms and a tshirt:(

I went to a wedding a couple years back where half the men wore football t-shirts and jeans or tracksuit bottoms. And the couple arent football fans! Me and my bf felt a little out of place especially as he was the only one but the groom and father of the bride in a suit. Ive never mentioned it to her so i dont know how she felt about it. there wasnt anything in the invite that said dont bother dressing up, or words to that effect! We were the ones everyone was staring at.
